its quite interesting, and a sign of the times that another great maverick talent mick crane often went awol and showed one or two bits of ill discipline in his time. crane was hailed as a genius back then, in today's world of internet foums he would be seen as a disruptive influence like tansey and most probably would have been sacked by the club

| I guess it all depends on the indiscipline guess. I personally think we should give him one more year to prove his worth and ability to behave. Agree with the comments about the error rate but as many have also said he opens defenses.

Well said. I posted a similar thing about the 'exploits' of Sean Long; could you imagine sacking him in his prime?
Hopefully his (Tansey) last warning will give him a kick up the Arris that he deserves.

I'd still use him at 9 if we can sign a full back and use Houghton off the bench. That way if we dont sign a half back and Long and/or Horne are injured we can simply use Tansey in the halves and if need be shift Berro back to 9 for a very limited time period.

No comparison. Crane was genuinely a great talent , one of the best I've ever seen. His "indiscipline" was essentially having a bet and a cig and not training as hard as he might BUT that was then when performance on the pitch was key. Mick never let us down on the field and for a fantastically creative player and a maverick he was also tremendously hard working. I suppose you could argue that he would have been even better if he'd had a different lifestyle but it could have worked the opposite way too. Tansy's issues off the field , we understand from the coach, are detrimental to his game and show up in the errors and lack of application. I agree in principle that we don't want to train the character out of players but they've got to be doing it on the pitch before you start to cut them any slack elsewhere.

| Just a couple of points.
1. Whilst a good player he certainly isn't good enough to be gettng additional leway/benefit of the doubt with regards disciplinary issues. Not saying that is the case by the way just that if this is his last chance they have to stick by it.
2. Would you be devastated to see him leave or indeed line up against us? For me the answer is not particularly. If we had any real creativity from other areas within the team his importance wouldn't be as seemingly vital.
3. This season was going to be a make or break one for him regardless off any indiscipline IMO. He needs to cut out the errors in his game, particularly the traditional FB errors, and kick on.
Tansey 'could' become a very good player for us but he isn't yet IMO.

| I've not mentioned his bad discipline which is obviously disruptive to any team and part of a culture at Hull we are desperate to stamp out. If he was an absolute undeniable attacking genius, the right thing would still be to get rid asap. If he was this superb attacking maverick some say he is, we will have no problems recouping what we've thrown at him already. We all know that no other SL club rates him highly enough to spend that kind of money on him. His attacking style is different to any of our other players, but there's been few examples of it being vastly superior, or effective. Also, if he was anywhere near being a better fullback than BJB, he would be in the England squad.

did crane ever miss training though? if so there is definately a comparison. main point i was making is what you said though, some players have a character that aids their play on the field - we don't want to see that eroded. this is where you find out if the coach has the man management skills to make the player toe the line whilst bringing out his best on the field

you cannot compare Mick Crane's era to modern day SL, not in terms of salary, fitness etc.

is young enough and certainly has shown glimpses that he could be a major player for fc in years to come.i remember during the midst of the season a lot of people raving about him, before his form dipped slightly.a few poor games and we should get rid!!!!there is no wonder people like myler and co prefer not to come to hull.

I went to school with Mick and he is one bloke I can honestly say that fame money or years never changed him. Mick was Mick, simple as. He astounded every one once by turning up for pre-season training at Hesslewood, Bunt told him he'd only get in the way and sent him back home and told him to be ready for the first match.
Mick enjoyed his Park Drive and the gee-gees, contrary to popular belief, he wasn't that much of a drinker. I've seen him in the boardroom, pre-match, flogging Warren Winetroube (director and club solicitor) a pair of Italian shoes that his mate had kyfed off the dock.
I have never seen a more naturally gifted footballer in my life. And he always had a grin on his face - the most infectios and mischievious grin you could imagine
Could he cut it in today's game?
I doubt it very much, he's 58 FFS

Mick enjoyed his rugby, he also enjoyed getting paid for doing something that he enjoyed and came so naturally to him. I seriously doubt that he would even consider playing pro-RL today, simply because all of a sudden his pleasure then becomes his job. Mick wouldn't be happy with that

| iknow alot of people on here either hate him or like him. I tipped him at the start of the season to be a player of the year or a fans player. I was wrong on his performances, but he sure has the ability to be that. I think having long and horne out for the lengths of time didnt help his cause.
Its now proven by his performances that he seems to be hit and miss, But for me with a fit half back partnership the way he links up with them he is still caple of making my predictions.
With his suspensions again maybe i might be wrong he could be another kingy, or whatever. But for me again next season i will still stick with it again for next year.
Id love him to knockle down as i really do think he has it in him to be a good player for hull fc. I hope he proves the doubters wrong

I disagree, I think the overwhelming feeling on here at the moment is "here we go again, talented prospect who is prone to going off the rails, another 'could have, would have, should have, if only'"
Down the years we've invariably had a "socialiser" in the squad, some of them did it and still pulled it off in training and on the field, others did it, trained averagely but were great game day, but more and more in modern sport you simply can't mix it, it's a short career where your body would, ideally, be a "temple", unfortunately it comes at a time in life (and with associated cash etc.) where your body is a dustbin and life can be a bit of a fun fair.
