With cap rules being clarified shortly, pre May, and our track record for getting business done early I'd expect us to know either way on Kelly in the next couple of months. For sure there'll be interest - there's such a lack of quality halves generally that it makes it more important than ever to be in the game early.

But you have to pay a player over 175k to make that work, I'm not sure we have any players who will be near that.

To be honest, I don't think anyone is worth 10% of the salary cap, but RU are NRL caps are way above ours, so maybe someone could be worth the extra.

Not sure how it all worked, but the bulldogs paying a good wedge ofFranjs contract will have helped last year, I reckon that's one of the main reasons we got rid, as we would have had to pay all his contract.

I think they will raise the cap, it's been the same for about 10 years, whilst our competitors have all risen there's a lot in recent years, even 100k would really help.

I don't see how the cap can be raised, unless prices go up, most people are struggling a bit as it is?

Hoffman was brilliant for Wigan in 2011, 6 years ago. Could still do it I'm sure as he's a quality player.
Also rumoured Tautai may be leaving Wigan. Plays prop but can play back row.

Williams isn't going to Wire. The NRL (Souths) have blown Wire's massive offer out of the water.
Wigan would probably promote from within. Jake Shorrocks could be a new 6, Tomkins to go back to 6, Powell is a 6 anyway and could play there if/when McIlorum returns.
Kelly isn't a Wane type of player.

As stated above, Kelly doesn't seem to fit in with being Wanes type of player. Maybe we're the best fit for him?
Why would Williams go to Wire?. Why leave the champions for a middle eights team?
He has plenty of admirers in the NRL, but wasn't aware Souths were after him. Good replacement for Kearey if true, but would be a shame to lose him from the British game.

Contract talks have begun with Kelly, surely a no brainier to keep him, we all know the risks, but if he wants to stay we have to take that risk

For a player of his calibre it's worth it. Will take money out of the cap but look at how other clubs are struggling to get quality halves. Heard a couple of NRL clubs interested too, so not holding my breath.

New deals to be offered to Kelly and Mini in next couple of weeks according to League Express. We're not in for Widdop.

I'd offer Kelly a 3yr deal and Mini a 2yr deal..

I think it would be a silly move to offer Kelly a 3 year deal. That's where he'll go off the rails, gotta keep him on his toes.

All to similar to his time with rovers, half way in to the season, offer him a silly contract on 4 grand a week and it went tits up.

Maybe he's happy and expressed an interest in staying?
It may be risky, but one worth taking. He's an NRL quality half back. They're scarce in the NRL, never mind Super League.

Offer him an extension to next season and renegotiate next year for a 2 year stay if he performs well.

It's the "second season syndrome" that we're worried about.

With the talk of contract upgrades, does anyone think that if Mini and Ellis do go around again it will be on contract "downgrades". Not in anyway meant to be a slight, but as players get older contracts tend to reduce over time. Just wondering if it happens that it may help to balance any upgrades.

Unless the we have a 2nd year option in our favour he can't walk away from I feel we have no option but to give him the going rate for a player of his quality. We've got him on the cheap this year so we are lucky.

If he'd ripped it up last year & not fell out with Hull KR we'd have paid more for his services this year anyhow.

Just get get him signed up.......................can't think of another player we could get on a SL level salary that would have such an impact on the team. if we aspire to stay at the top & to actually win a GF he's a player we must keep.

No rumour but seeing Westerman at our reserves and chatting to Radders, made me think, would we have him back as a replacement for Mini or Ellis (Long term) if used right he is a very good player IMO.
