I can't remember when, one-on-one, Yeaman has failed us this year but I can certainly think of several times when outnumbered he has come out of the line and stopped attacks dead in their tracks.

I can remember many times this season when Yeaman has come charging out of the line, missed his intended target and its resulted in us conceeding a try.

Do you watch games?
Leeds last week, when Smith ran through him, also watch Tony Clubb go straight past him at Quins away.
Thats two off the top of my head, there has been a few times this season when I have been disapointted with his one on one defence.

Take the the Abblett try at Leeds. Everyone is blaming Thorman for the missed tackle yet Yeaman actually turns his back on the player. Something i wouldn't expect at U-12's.

Yes I do watch games and I think it's very easy to pick on one player when a whole passage of play led to that one situation. This thread is about Hall and my comments were supposed to be in answer to the assertion that Hall's defence was better then Yeaman's, Whiting's and G Horne's. Hall makes defensive errors in the normal passage of play and continues to make the same errors without seeming to learn. Yeaman has made some mistakes, granted - but usually on the back of facing set after set after set because of our poor ball retention.

My assertion is that it is no worse, but that Hall offers more in attack. Hence the reason i would pick him in front of all three.

Ah - fair point - you did say "no worse". That's the part I disagreed with. I do agree that he brings far more flair, ability and speed in attack though.

I wouldn't go that far, but it is not as bad as is made out IMO. His defensive frailties nearly all revolve around his decision making, something which should be fixable but certainly not by playing in the reserves.

| Probably the best for all concerned for Hall to go out out loan. He is a talented player that needs to work on some of the more basic (ugly) elements of the game and a spell in NL1 should do him good. I do wish people would stop excusing his errors and poor defence just because he has a bit of flair in attack though. I agree with the poster who said he hasn't progressed since he first came into the team. He still makes the same errors and doesn't seem to be learning from them, thats not just down to the coach its also about the players attitude IMO. I hope his spell at Widnes does the trick and he come back a better player.

| Quote ="downtheante"Yeaman's defence this year has been great, Witings is good and I admit Horne missed a few. But Hall's defence is terrible - it's as simple as that. He has a great attacking flair and accelleration off the mark that you can't teach, and an uncanny knack of finding the tryline. I really rate him as a prospect and expect/hope that Agar will play him again this year at centre now that the grounds are harder. I don't think Saints is the game though because they know he has recently been low on confidence and would target him pitilessly. I think he needs to play either a lower competitive grade (not in the reserves) or SL level to sort his defensive frailties out - but, in my opinion, his defence is nowhere near as good as the three you have mentioned (yet).'"
Yeaman puts in the odd big hit but his winningness to rush out of teh line trying to make it leaves us exposed frequently

The stats show that we have a lot of high tackles missed individually including high figures from R Horne, Tickle, Manu and others (admittedly, also including Yeaman).
Just to prove myself completely wrong, Craig Hall's missed tackles are very low: 4 out of 7 games. Interestingly Whiting and G Horne's missed-tackle stats are pretty good compared with other centres.
So I probably have to admit that my perception about Yeaman's defence is wr... wr.... wr... sorry can't type it. Might have to change those rose-tinted lenses for the Saints match.

Indeed, he misses far more tackles when he rushes out of the line than he hits. See last years CC final for a glaring and awful example of his dubious defence on our line.

A lot of a centres "missed" tackles won't show on the stats as they're only tackles attempted and not completed. Doesn't reflect how many times a centre is out of position. None of them are great but I would have probably said g horne is our best defensive centre

| Hope Hall goes on loan as mooted to a good NL1 club. He needs to play in a less pressured environment but one that is physically tough. Then we can see if he has the makings of a player.
IMO, bagging the coaching staff for Hall's shortcomings is downright dim. Briscoe has flourished, why hasn't Hall? He makes elementary errors time and again, and doesn't seem to learn from experience. These errors are not usually due to the coach playing him out of his best position, for Christ's sake he knocks on playing the ball, he knocks on picking the ball up one handed at dummy half etc. etc.
IMO, everything points to him not being up to it MENTALLY. Think a spell in NL1 will help show whether he can turn that around. I really hope he does as he is an unusually gifted player.
