| Quote ="Marfa Manu"Forgive me but I genuinely do not understand your post, Gleeson is an FC player and we are all aware he is not playing due to stress, I personally see no problem about any-one questioning the fact he is going to a concert because tbh not every-one is aware about how mental illness is treated and clearly it is an opportunity for people to possibly gain a better understanding, and why can people not speculate about what may happen regarding his playing career for FC ?'"
What coddy said.
No problem discussing the issue, but gossip about him going out is gossip and we all know its not relevant

| He is at a concert unless longy is lieing and i dont think that.
One way for folk with bad stress to recover is to try and get back into everyday life and going to a concert is one thing so longy is helping his mate and anyone who suggests he is swinging the lead so to speak is out of order !

| Its not speculation about him going out tonight, Longy has posted it on twitter. If his treatment is to do normal activities then why isn't he training ?

If he had his arm in pot and went to the gig you would not ask that question...the same principle applies, basically he is considered not fit for work the same as if he had a broken bone. His treatment no doubt involves trying to resume normal activities however just because he goes to a gig tonight does not guarantee he will bounce out of bed on Friday morning and feel like resuming all normal activities in his life, just as a broken bone takes time to heal so does a persons mind.

| Quote ="steve_norton"I got a lot of stick on here for commenting on him being off for "stress", obviously it's not so debilitating that he can't go out to a concert with Longy tonight. I don't suppose the club were left with anywhere to go but to allow him this leave but its been several weeks now, he still isn't back and the club have not given any timetable for his return. I hope they are monitoring the situation closely. I still believe its all too easy these days for people to claim stress and get time off work causing more expense for others and there seems very little employers can do without it. It cost the Uk government over 3 billion pounds last year, imagine how many jobs and services could be saved if people had more personal responsibility ?'"
Longy said Gleeson needed cheering up and he was taking him to a concert, what has that got to do with us on here?

Seems fair enough to me. If the guy is depressed then surely it's better to get out and about than be shut up all day.

the square root of nothing Paul.
If he isn't training, at all, then there is no way he'll be back this season, fair enough if that is the case and it's a medical decision, I just hope it gets sorted for next season.

| Isn't depression treatable by medication? I always thought it was some kind of chemical imbalance in the brain. Presumably he's on his meds and we have some kind of timeline for his return to training (Doubt it will be this season).
Whilst I have sympathy for his illness, I believe the club need some definitive action on the situation either way before pre season training starts or we#ll have another situation like the berrigan one.
I'm surprised that a player with only half a dozen appearances for the club is being treated by some as a kind of untouchable due to mental illness, whilst a man who is, no doubt, under massive pressure and has given 7 years of his life is villified every day on here

Excercise is one of the best things, maybe we should think of someway we could get him to do things like that. I would say the worst thing to do is let he be sat at home , away from his peers

No you are thinking about conditions like Bi-polar which a person suffers all their lives and need medication to control the condition. It is likely he is suffering from unipolar, a condition which can affect most people who get a one off episode due to stresses eg, divorce, death etc. Although medication can help with unipolar they are generally only used in shorterm.

Depression can be managed by medication but rarely cured. It tends to be used to nullify the symptoms without actually addressing the cause. It’s useful for getting people through crisis, but it will not cure depression and it’s certainly not a silver bullet. A friend of mine had depression to the point of suicidal thoughts, he received medication, but he vehemently suggests that Counselling, therapy and exercise where the three things that pulled him through – not the medication that he spent two years addicted to. I suppose it’s entirely subjective, we’re all unique and deal with and respond to things differently.

Without going into detail, personal experience would agree with the post above, and I would hope that Gleeson has now had a good 4 or 5 months of counselling support and should, realistically, be coming through the other side of his problems, unless he is exacerbating them somehow. People are very rarely "cured", but you develop coping mechanisms and learn to identify and exentuate the other positive elements of life.
It's frustrating because he is a great player and we knew the potential problems when we signed him.

Yes they maybe but it will only be a short term solution if it is a unipolar episode, normally other methods are tried first unless the individual is having suicidal thoughts then the GP will prescribe straight away.

this is way O/T, but a GP wouldn't prescribe anything to someone who is suicidal.

You are so wrong with that, of course they do, when an individual visits the GP with stress/depression they will be asked a number of questions one of those questions will be if they had at any point felt suicidal if the answer is yes they prescibe mediaction!!! fact, alongside they are offered other services.
That is one of the main reason why medication is offered to a client suffering a unipolar episode.
They are then referred to the mental health team straight away and normally seen very quickly.
