Trying to be positive, I think out squad on paper is stronger than last season
Stronger at FB
weaker on the wing
same at centre (although I fancy Carlos to suprise a few this season)
Stronger at halfback (depth)
A lot Stronger at prop
Weaker in the backrow.
You keep saying we have lost better forwards, but Satae was massively inconsistent, hardly did any work and Savelio and Griffin, spent more time off the pitch. Doesn't matter how good you are if they don't play.
Youngsters will be better after some gamtime last season and another pre season.
I'm sure it will all change, but feeling a bit of positive at at the moment.

The feeling is mutual. He's a spent force and in hindsight we should never have signed him.
While we're all having a laugh and joke, Rovers are better off without him. It does look a bit like panic stations though with you after Gale and Reynolds

Not really a suprise, he was awful and apparently not very well liked by the other players except Connor.

Overall I think we are actually stronger as a squad and have a little more depth. We are weaker in certain positions but in the forwards we’ve certainly massively improved.
You say about Hoy, Walker & Trueman having huge injury records but then say about Taylor who the past 2-3 seasons suffered a lot of injurues. Satae for me whilst he could be one of the top forwards in SL he lacked consistency to repeat his good games week in week out and could be quite lazy defensively.
I can see the halves being Brown & Trueman (when fit) with Walker & Hoy fighting out for the FB role with Houghton/Smith and hopefully Balmforth at 9. We then have options available to have Hoy/Smith in the halves and Brown at 9 etc if needed so that again is another improvement that we have cover.
Wing & SR are still an area of concern as the loss of Swift was and is huge. SR we were hit and miss although Griifin when in the pitch was good. Lane needs a big pre season and has to hit the ground running. Hopefully with the likes of Okunbor, Ashworth, Severs & Staveley it will mean they have to perform to be in the 17.
However it was going to be an impossible task to completely change every player and think the club has done a good job to change as much as they have such was the state of the squad inherited by Smith.

There's a thing called contracts and up until Burgess having his terminated for a serious breach of contract then he'd have still been a Salford player and we'd already signed Tindall and McIntosh is still under contract. Now as we have had an issue with culture etc and Smith wanting to change the internal culture within the club he may well have thought Burgess wasn't the right fit for the squad/club.
You can't simply get rid of contracted players unless of course you know where the pot of gold or money tree is to pay off contracted players or know clubs who want them etc?
The fact Burgess is still on the look out for a club shows other clubs probably don't have the money or the cap space available at this late stage or are/were interested in his signature. There's been plenty of talk from the dark side about making more signings but no movement seemed to have been made until Abdull left for Catalans on loan, which suggest they maybe didn't have sufficient space themselves.

| Burgess is decent but not great, and coming off the back of getting sacked I'm glad we didn't go for him.
Personally I think Lewis Martin is going to be a fantastic winger.

Really? He scored 23 tries in 54 Red Devils games in 2023, which was only 3 behind super league top scorer,Tom Johnston.
With a good centre inside of him, he will certainly get plenty of chances to show his ability.

You don't really think that he played 54 games last season do you?
He played 25 and scored 4 tries. He scored 16 in 21 games in 2022.

You genuinely can not be that thick. I just don't believe it.
In Super League last year he scored 2 trys (not sure about the CC) and made more errors than any other player.
Anyway, he's nothing to do with Hull FC so that's the last I'll say on the guy.

| We have to start playing our homegrown players at some point.
Otherwise what’s the point in devoting resources to it?
If we’d signed him to the detriment of Lewis Martin, I’d have been gutted.
Losing Abdul and signing Burgess unbalances their squad, but I don’t care about them.
Looking forward to watching the continued development of Martin, Moy, Armstrong, Charles, Medforth , etc, etc.

| Think the 'development' of our young guns unlikely to be in SL just yet. Sadly we are talking about talent & potential - I REALLY REALLY hope some come through to be SL regulars, but lets face it, the last ones are Brad Fash & Cam Scott - the physicality required is a major step up.
Hopefully Balmforth will come through this year - but that is on the back of a full year in the championship, plus he is built like a rock !! Expect the young guns to be largely in reserves or loan ? Was impressed by Laidlaw & Gardner, hopefully they are closer to making the step up ?

Balmforth also has pace and should help his development into a S/L player next season

I'd agree and they have such depth in the backs, particularly the three quarters that I can see some being very unhappy. Behind what is a pretty ordinary pack, they may wish they'd signed a couple of tackle busting props or second rowers, instead. Tanginoa is a good player, but hardly fit and the rest fit the workman like tag , for me anyway. I think it has been a case of I have got it, so I will spend it when you think of Gildart,Opacic, Evalds, Hiku, Corey Hall all battling for just three spots, given that R Hall is a shoe in, so their youth policy is obviously of low priority. I think we will see a few standouts from our emerging talent. I really like the look of Tindall, Staveley and Balmforth of the young guns vying for a place in the starting 17, all of which gives hope to the rest, who may not quite be ready for the physicality of SL, just yet, but see us as a better pathway to that end goal.
