One was a bad pass the other he should have taken, the fact that other players where around with the high doesn't alter the fact that he tried to catch a high ball with his foot, what did he expect to happen, trap the ball?

I'd disagree. Both were bad passes, one of which he could possibly have taken but didn't.

As for the kick, of the more experienced players who were nearer to the ball, one ought to have called for it and taken the responsibility away from a youngster who has played next to no first team rugby. He shouldn't have gone at it with his boot, but he shouldn't have been in that position to start with.
