The problem with offering settlement is that if we approach Long it's immediately in his favour. Can't see us getting much change from that scenario.

I think there is a way around the salary cap issue. Hull pay Leigh a 'transfer fee' which doesn't count against our salary cap. Leigh pay Ellis off the remainder of this year's contract. Ellis comes to us and plays for a low wage which fits within the cap.
Hull stay within the cap, Ellis is not out of pocket (in fact his wages are more secure than if he was relying on Leigh paying them) and Leigh are compensated.
Apparently Wigan did something similar when they paid £440k to Bradford for Fielden.
This all assumes, of course, that Leigh would be happy to lose Ellis mid-season. TBH I hope they're not facing bankruptcy because it's bad for the game.
