2nd one maybe, but the first one he jumped had it and dropped it.
Agree about the defence on the first two try's though, some really poor one on one misses.

Not unfair at all, if you're in the correct position you can make those plays.

Interesting comment. You seem to think moving from the 4th-placed team and cup finalists to a team who didn't even make the play-offs and went out of the cup at the first attempt is a "step up".

Re-reading his comment, maybe you are right. I think it's fair to say the Hull FC fans expect more from their players (particularly when you have paid 100k for them) than us at Cas (who didn't even pay his wages!).

Quote ="knockersbumpMKII"What academy? are you seriously trying to compare our youth system of the last 2 years with how it as when Agar was in charge? You're comparing apples with trees
Young players went on to play in the first team and were given a chance in exactly the same mould as Radford and indeed Gentle have, that we couldn't develop them or they just weren't good enough isn't the arguement here is it?
Our system when Agar was in charge was probably the worst in the league, that wasn't Agar's fault per-se, that was down to the owners massive lack of investment in the youth system and the fact they employed an assistant coach not ready for a SL position and out of his depth, similar to the present encumbant.
But we have a fantastic youth system for a couple of years now, Radford has being able to reach into the locker of the kids (as did Gentle in his second year) and get himself the extra few wins that might well have seen us get relegated last year.
You can disagree all you like, the FACTS that I've stated makes it pretty clear and you haven't atually rebuffed my arguement in the slightest, Radford has done nothing whatsoever different to coaches of the past and when you think how much our youth system has improved Radford hasn't brought the youth through and trusted in them as people like you would have us believe (& indeed his own words), in fact it's pretty clear he has shunned them until he had no other options but to use them..
If we don't start putting trust into our massively improved youth system then what's the point? Look at Wigan, have they being afraid to bring in their kids, not in the slightest and look how strong they are season after season.

TBF, a pair of 22-year-olds, one with less than 20 games under his belt at the time and another with less than 40, a history of injuries in his short career, recently returning from the latest are hardly revelatory to leave out, are they?
I appreciate the point that Radford has dropped some players, but I can also see the argument from some that he hasn't really dropped anyone notable, yet. Arguably because there wasn't too much opportunity to do so when it was deserved last year, but this year might tell us more.

| I said last season that Yeaman was the same as Ben Crooks in reverse. Crooks awful in defence but can be brilliant in attack. Meanwhile Yeamo hailed for his defence but shows uttely nothing ball in hand. Crooks was the scapegoat and ended up going.
We decided flair and pace was behind the 'big hit'.
Yeamo offers us nothing in attack. I want to see some attacking prowess and some flair with our centres. I'm not saying drop him yet but I can't see any improvement in his game over the last few years.

Still some slightly interesting interpretation there though, isn't there?
Whilst there's a lot more in the 2014 group, the vast majority of them were already established first-teamers before the start of the season. Of those 112 appearances, 96 came from players who had already made their debuts under Gentle, which leaves 16 from Radford promoting youth. IIRC, from Agar's list you can attribute 39 appearances to players he brought through. Now how do they compare?
Obviously, it's great to see academy-produced players in our first-team regardless of who gave them their debuts, and it's still to Radford's credit for him to play them, but I do think that there seems to be some over-egging going on about how he is responsible for creating some sort of 'youth-charge' into the first team.

Once Michaels is fit Yeamo should be dropped if he's not performing. Michaels has more pace and as an experienced NRL player he should be good in defence too.

Firstly, or should I say "yet again, for those hard of understanding", I'm not hailing Radford's saviour of youth status, simply pointing out:
1 He's been genuine in giving young players gametime
2 He's a key reason Shaul and Abdull are in the game
3 He seems genuine in his commitment to a homegrown core of a squad.
You say this comparison is unfair to Agar because the players aren't ones Radford has brought through. Yet on that basis Agar has an unfair advantage, being in his third year as head coach compared to Radford in only his first. Furthermore Agar inherited a reasonable position. A few games before he started, FC beat Bradford 20-10 to secure a home play-off tie with only Head as an overseas player. He'd also been around the club for a fair while, so perhaps he reaped what he'd sown, pipeline-wise.
My opinion is that if Abdul is flying and Pryce struggling, Abdul is likely to play. Why would Radford be making a fuss about us giving the U19s title a shot if he didn't genuinely want to promote from within as a proactive policy?

I said nothing about 'unfair'. I said it was an interesting interpretation. By that I meant that your evidence that Radford would pick a youngster over an established player was to produce a list of appearances by young homegrown players heavily leant towards players who were already first-teamers under the last coach. So in most of those instances, he's sticking with the already tried & trusted, not particularly promoting youth over faltering experience. IMO he's not particularly used academy players instead of established players, he's simply used them when he's had others unavailable. That's not a criticism or a compliment or anything of that sort, just a statement of how I think things are (and FWIW, should be in the main). I have still yet to see him leave out anyone I consider to be an established player for a relative newcomer (unless it's because they earn a bucketload and are being forced out), but I do think there have been a handful of instances of experienced players unjustifiably being included ahead of more deserving cases.
So I'm yet to be convinced on the latter point, but I hope you're proved right.

AND? Your stats are pointless, I've already stated as to why but you don't get it do you? You're still comparing apples with trees, you cannot make an absolute comparison between how many yooungsters we have now in the squad to back then..or are you as I said trying to say our youth sysem 5 years ago and beyond (the worst in the league) was better or equal to what we have now??
By comparison it's a surprise we had that many make any appearances given the state it was in, the last 2 years have shown fruition of the investment and rightly so AND is to be applauded.
However the point you are completely missing is that Radford has not brought the youngsters through more so on a like for like basis compared to previous coaches.
You still have not being able to support your original statement about disagreeing with what I said, everything I said was true/accurate and clearly indicated Radford's lack of wanting to use the youth at times when he could/should have..
But whatever, you want to argue you have more kids in the squad now, that's pretty hard not to have considering how few were good enough..
IF we fail and I hope to god we don't, Radford will/has to be the 'scapegoat', the buck always stops at the coach.

No it wasn't, it missed the point completely, it ignored the fact that our academy is brilliant now and has being reaping the rewards of investment over the last 2 years, by comparison our youth system previous to 2012 was the worst in the SL..in absolute numbers terms you can't make the comparison Mrs B has made to make the point against my arguement..
agree it was good stats research

Radford's been part of the coaching set-up for a while, right? Both Shaul and Abdul have cited his direct influence on them not being lost to the game. Perhaps he has played a small part in the development of one or two more. Let's be generous.
Whether we have queues of academy players ready for first team action or not, it's clear that under Radford they do get some game time, which is a positive thing, surely? Radford's general overall style I would say places defence as greater than attack. Yeaman has been a good defensive centre for a decade or so. Perhaps this is a factor in his selection rather than simply to ensure the youngsters Pearson's invested in don't get a game which you seem to suggest is his motivation. I think Turgut will get game time this year, along with Abdull, Logan, BTW, Lancaster, Downs, maybe a few others. One or all will make mistakes because they are young. Maybe seeing us in the bottom four. Radders will definitely be the scapegoat then for many.
Again, I'm not saying Radford is the saviour of youth at Hull FC. But there is evidence he gives young players a go. Fortunately.

I am personally not a fan of Radford, I don't think that he is the right man for the job. But, reading all the posts, if you discount any evidence whatsoever (the merits of which can be argued over) and go with your own thoughts of how things currently are with youth....................from a personal point of view, there seems to be more getting a go and a genuine excitement over the youth in the team. I hope they get a good go. It certainly seems in my mind that there are more around and more getting games.
I personally see us needing to sit back and watch for 2 years with zero expectation of anything, and just wait for this team to grow. As fans we have the power to destroy things, and we shouldn't. Having said that, I will still say my piece as required, but overall, I reckon we need stability as this chopping and changing has damaged us rather than strengthened. As much as I disagree with the premise, I think it might be time for a bit of blind support.

Houghton is younger than Hall and was younger in 2010 than Bowden was in 2014. He was playing semi-regular by 2010, I think? That'd draw the numbers closer together.
The test for your not unreasonable hypothesis will come this season. Playing Shaul, Abdull and Logan ahead of, say, McDonnell, Miller and Arundel makes Gentle's signing policy look bad. Playing Logan ahead of, for example, Sa or Abdull (possibly more of a 13, looking ahead?) ahead of Pryce, might be considered to reflect badly on Radford's own decision-making.
For the first-team, I'd always want the best player chosen, irrespective of age or provenance. Are you saying you would like to see those factors influence selection? Or implying that Agar deliberately didn't play superior players because of their being young/homegrown?
If it is more that Agar was excessively risk averse and Radford is happier to roll the dice (and i know how nervous risk makes you, albeit in a different context ), then in Agar's defence he'd already been getting brickbats for a season and a half by 2010, whereas Radford started 2014 with a full measure of political capital and, in the main, somebody else's squad.
Certainly, Hull seem to be in a better position in this regard, comparing now and then - and really, if that is the case, who cares whether it is chicken or egg?

| Need to take into account the ability of the current crop poking there noses through. These kids have been the best in the country at their age group for years. Yes, Pearson's investment has helped to nurture them as opposed to the hindrance under Hetherington's woeful investment, but the Abdull's, HTW, Turgut, BTW, Logan & Lancasters are good enough to be making it at any academy, we are extremely blessed.
