Backtrack all you like, it was pretty clear. If he isn't capable of fulfilling his contract he is entitled to have it paid up - just as he would if he suffered a physical illness or injury.

I'll make this clear, I am not suggesting we do any such thing, what I believe we should do is clarify the situation so both parties can plan for the future, IF we end up paying him off then we should retain his registration. I hear different things, from that he is incapable of playing, to that he and Long are holding the club to ransom.

| I would hope the club have a duty of care to their employees and treat him with the respect he deserves. If he is not ready by the start of next season then maybe looking at releasing him? Obviously I don't know the legality of his contract, but I would expect any reasonable employer to support a new member of staff, no matter what their role is, but there comes a time when the employer has to think of what's reasonable and economical.

| I got a lot of stick on here for commenting on him being off for "stress", obviously it's not so debilitating that he can't go out to a concert with Longy tonight. I don't suppose the club were left with anywhere to go but to allow him this leave but its been several weeks now, he still isn't back and the club have not given any timetable for his return. I hope they are monitoring the situation closely. I still believe its all too easy these days for people to claim stress and get time off work causing more expense for others and there seems very little employers can do without it. It cost the Uk government over 3 billion pounds last year, imagine how many jobs and services could be saved if people had more personal responsibility ?

If he's been diagnosed as suffering from clinical depression, then it's not just a case of 'taking more responsibility'. And I don't know if it's crossed your mind, but do you reckon the mental strain of going to a concert with your mate is the same as that involved with being at work full time?

Most approaches to treating mental health are holistic...Basically whatever suits the client, if it be a concert, gym or shopping trip it is irrelevant. The treatment is about getting the client to full health, it is not clear what triggered his stress, what level he is at and what care plan is in place so it would be wrong to judge.
Also on topic most industries pay 6 months full pay, then 6 months half pay, although I am not sure where professional sports people stand, I know most have insurance so not sure if that is triggered, or how it affects the salary cap etc.

Nail on the head...The biggest problem is there is so much ignorance, lack of understanding and stigma attached to mental health....every-body suddenly becomes a consultant ...they have not got a clue, it affects 1 in 5 people and their families.

Its pretty clear what triggered his "stress", but obviously it's not allowed to be commented on

| I've got better things to do than monitor this today, and other mods may have different views, but back on topic, no speculation about Gleeson, or what he's doing tonight.
No probs for me with discussion based on the op, but keep it there or this goes

Forgive me but I genuinely do not understand your post, Gleeson is an FC player and we are all aware he is not playing due to stress, I personally see no problem about any-one questioning the fact he is going to a concert because tbh not every-one is aware about how mental illness is treated and clearly it is an opportunity for people to possibly gain a better understanding, and why can people not speculate about what may happen regarding his playing career for FC ?
