| Quote ="JMR"It looks as though Westerman was always going to go this off-season. From what I was told, Pearson made the decision to cash in on his two most saleable assets midway through last season.
This would explain why the club suddenly changed tact and signed Sika Manu, withdrawing a contract offer to Jordan Rankin in the process.
It's fairly obvious that a chunk of his Westerman's salary has long been accounted for.
But, by not revealing his true hand too early, Pearson has been able to push a "no squad is stronger narrative" to feed pass sales.
He's even managed to suppress the news coming out before the shirt launch.
Good PR or cynical PR? Either way, I think he's surpassed himself with the vehemence of his recent denials, even having the audacity to claim "Joe is a big part of the club's plans moving forward."
The news of Westerman's move to Warrington will break next week.
The only question is, whether Pearson will attempt to cushion the blow with a "too good an offer to turn down" response, or pin another guilt-trip on fans, blaming sluggish pass sales!'"
Seems fairly certain that we're happy to cash in on any saleable british talent we have, trouser the cash and use the salary cap to bring in overseas players. I'd expect this to continue whilst pearson owns the club and we remain a team fighting for 8th place each year. He's clearly bitten off more than he can chew with the club and completely misread the situation and the clubs' fans. The best case scenario in the short term is he can get a wealthy fan on board to at least prop us up, worst case is we continue to sell our best players and end up playing championship rugby in an empty stadium.

| There's no doubt he's made mistakes who doesn't but he's still put his money in and made on paper at least some cracking signings this year . We have a pack who IMO is one of the best in SL. The backs maybe be not the best but we have good youngsters who could surprise a few. Am really looking forward to the new season but then again I always do

| If we had not git replacements already signed, the loss if Westerman would be a blow. He is significantly more than just average as some suggest on this thread. That said, I do think Westerman plays within himself at times. There has been the odd flash of creative spark but all to infrequent. Westerman is a good work horse for us, but we have plenty of those.
I think there are far too many over analysing this situation and Pearsons actions. It's almost as though some are resentful toward the guy. Surely if we are overloaded in the forwards and we can cash in one someone who could leave for free in 12 months time then that's got to be a decent thing to do?

It was our fitness and conditioning coach that took Agar's scapegoat position with the club, now he's gone so you may be right it will all be down to Agar again. Although it's heartening to see my club bring back Jon Clarke who really was our best scapegoat for some time.
I think most on our board would have preferred a prop, mind you most teams do, if the Westerman rumours are true.

You make a good argument and I'm inclined to agree with you.
Unfortunately it's not selling Westerman that people deride AP for. It's the duplicity of coming out with the "over my dead body" tour statements when he knows full well he plans to sell.

I agree.Pearson just doesnt do himself any favours with the fans when he comes out with these statements.
I guess we all know now why Washbrook was signed.

| If Westerman on his way good he's lazy and only turns it on 1 game in three Abdul needs to be starting at 13, use the cap space to get a top hooker in to spell Danny why anyone is concerned I don't know if he stays he needs a boot up his arris because he was shocking most of last year

| Who is this top class hooker people think we are going to sign?
If Westerman leaves that doesn't mean anybody else is coming in.

This is exactly right.
The irony is, I think most fans could probably see the thinking behind accepting a fee for Westerman.
But it's Adam's obsession with pass sales - and the cold, calculated PR which comes with protecting them - which are damaging him more than the decisions themselves!
It was hard to not feel some sympathy for Motu Tony last week. I wouldn't have wanted that Hull Daily Mail interview to carry my name.
..."just rumours"...no approaches"..."committed to extending Joe's contract."
Just days later a deal was done. Are fans honestly meant to think these deals just happen?
Motu doesn't deserve to become a Comical Ali figure to Adam's Saddam.

| I personally aren't bothered about Westerman, he is too inconsistent and how long do we have to wait for him to become this star player, apart from once at Cats away I can't remember a great try he scored or assist. He works hards and has decent defence, although can be sloppy at times, but we have players like Washy, Whiting and even Hadley that can do that role, but much cheaper.
I will be annoyed with the club though, they did it with Lineham and looks like it with Westerman, they need to stop lying or at least not putting out these press statements saying players are staying etc.

| Perhaps saying the player is staying increases the fee to be paid as he is seen as an asset.
I don't think AP is as stupid as many people on here like to make out.

I agree, and this is something Radford has got right, it has needed doing for years.
Happy to see him released personally, he is never going to be the player it was thought he could be.
What are the outstanding facets of his game? He takes it to the line and links play well but I can't think of anything else he is particularly good at. He lacks any real power or mobility. He certainly works hard albeit with a few crucial defensive errors.
But for probably half the price, Danny Washbrook can work hard, and if he is dropped he won't throw his toys out of the pram and ring up his agent telling him to get him a new club (ref: Leeds away).
