| AP seemed pretty confident that an overseas half back would be signed. I'm guessing it's a younger, cheaper player if Seymour is getting hard to shift out the club.
If that's the case, hopefully Seymour will do a Finch & have a good second season.

| Quote ="Billy Batten"We can dream can't we...
The fact of the matter is no matter what excuse anyone makes, we do not currently have a scrum half with the skill, vision and ability to make us a top 4 team never mind grand finalists.
We have leadership from our forwards in spades but that just is not enough.
[uBreaking the bank is the only serious way we can aspire to the next level.[/u'"
Genuine quality scrum halves demand high salaries.
People need to get some perspective on competition's deteriorating half back quality.
Wigan - Matty Smith/Blake Green (who they supposedly paid £150k for), 5 years ago it was Thomas Leuluai and Trent Barrett. Saints - Lomax & Hohaia vs 2007's Long and Pryce.
To "break the bank" for a genuine NRL star would be pointless because the amount of cap they would demand would mean they were playing behind a beaten pack each week. In the current environment, Holdsworth is a very good capture and an upcoming Australian would be OK too. The bigger concern, and not just for us, across the SL, is the lack of quality coming through the ranks in the halves.

I don't mean to be smug (which is a lie, obviously) but I told you the non-fed rule was based on a false premise. Rendered moot by our poverty anyway.

It would be far from ideal. But we have to be realistic about our options. We've already done well in this market to get Holdsworth. We've gone to great lengths to get Chase and were unsuccessful due to visa restrictions. Our options are either Seymour, rumoured to had a knee injury, or to look at affordable Australian options. Prince would be worth the risk IMO (Horne, Galea, Whiting, maybe McGoldrick as back up with Holdsworth). But as Sheldon says, it's pretty unlikely. Titans captain, will be on a big wedge.

Given the precarious nature of Gold Coasts finances albeit new investment supposedly coming in to clear 5 mil debt.
All players want the security of a long term deal and Prince may well consider Hull a better option of financially maximising his last few years in the game.
Sure, Gold Coast state they will honour current player contracts but you never know.

| btw, now it isn't happening - Whitehead wouldn't have been that good a signing. He's 23 now and steady enough I suppose, but nothing especially out of the ordinary.

It's not just about being realistic, it's also about us getting more selective. If by some chance someone like Prince or Hornby is available, we shouldn't just jump in with both feet because there's nobody better apparent. We keep signing halfbacks with problems out of desperation and ending up being stuck with them on our cap stopping us replacing them. Making another poor signing at halfback now would set us back again, I'd hate us to give in to panic because of a few moaning fans, we'd be better off waiting to get it right.

I agree to some extent, but you have to be confident of the 2014 player to let a 2013 opportunity pass, otherwise you're shafted until 2015. As we've already seen, we think deals are done, players change their minds and agents are making hay in this market which will get tougher, not easier.

If we sign a crock/has been on a 2 year deal and they don't play/cut it we'd still be shafted until 2015. Isn't that essentially what's happened with our current & previous scrum halves? The one before that we were rescued by an appearance clause, too.
How many times should we gamble on a halfback approaching mid-30s/with fitness concerns in the hope that they last as long as the contract they sign?

| Feck me, I don't know how many times I have to say this, Prince would be an awful signing. If he didn't do a 'McKinnon' on us I'd be amazed. Doesn't take on the line much anymore, kicking game is very hit & miss and seems to lack any real commitment in his game anymore.
I'm sure he'd be available, GC can probably see he's finished.

I'm with you on that.
The Prince of 3-4 years ago would have been a brilliant signing, not so much now.

| While Prince isn't the player he was he'd easily be the best half in the comp, he could play in a dinner suit.
Won't happen though.
