Stevo wouldn't have called it 'momentum'; he'd have decided that the laws of physics no longer applied because Hall's forward progress was stopped by Fitzpatrick. What actually happened was that Hall's imparted momentum caused the ball to travel forwards relative to the pitch despite him passing it legally.

I've had people saying 5 metres at least mate. Was no more forward than Yeamons pass is all i was saying, so we have no reason to complain being unfairly treated. Happened both ways

I was just disappointed that theirs needed to be forward to score. Ours could easily have been backwards and made no difference, yet we can't. We'll get caught out one day

You're the only person who sees it that way. And the footage so far released certainly doesn't back you up. Until something more definitive is available I'm going to go with the majority opinion, particularly as it's the one backed up by comments from coaches and officials.

You're making the mistake of thinking that the ball travelling forwards means it's a 'forward pass'. It doesn't.

One other thing that's come back to me after watching the highlights.

For the scrum that led to Briscoe's try. We had the usual thing where 6 of our players set up for a scrum so Ian Smith would stop the clock.

But he appeared to refuse to do so because we had Thorman in the pack and only did so when someone else took his place

And, in this case, it's momentum that applies.

The easiest way to tell is that both Yeaman and Hall are running at around the same speed. Yeaman is behind Hall when the pass is thrown. He doesn't have to speed up to catch it, nor does he have to reach forward. It hits him perfectly on the chest, exactly as you'd expect a legal pass between two players travelling at similar speeds to do.

Another way of looking at it: Hall was travelling forwards at around 7m/s, meaning that the ball was also. After the pass, the ball was in the air for just over half a second. Had it been released exactly sideways, it would travel forwards around 3.5m in that time. Yeaman caught the ball around 3m ahead of where it was released, meaning that not only was the pass not forwards, it was not even 'flat'; it was backwards. Obviously that's not a totally reliable measurement, based, as it is, on the video and timings from the highlights on Hull's site, but I think it's accurate enough for this purpose.

It wasn't really a time-consuming calculation, taking about as long as it took to watch the highlights of that try.

Which try are you refering to ? I was talking about his first try at the north stand end when the break was on Hull's left hand pitch side.

For me. the touch judge should have picked it up. He was perfectly positioned - if he can't see that he needs demoting.


(As for our first try, it was a backwards pass. It may have moved forwards relative to the ground but relative to the passer and receiver, it was backwards and legal.)

touch judges dont check for forward passes or offside.. all they dois put there flag up if the ball or player goes in touch.. and thats not always right
