The whole thing stinks. Can only assume the RFL were too far committed in their deals with Hudgell to block the re-registration because of the non-materialisation of the passport. After all, as far as the RFL was concerned, the passport arrival was guaranteed - I'm sure they were led to believe it was actually en route before agreeing to the de-registration and the caveats for re-registration cooked up with Hudge.

I reckon this particular scenario was probably not considered, so the RFL were not in a position to refuse the re-reg on this basis.

All complete speculation, but I bet that Rovers' stock with the RFL is only fit to make potato peelings soup at the moment. The final line of the RFL statement reeks of undertones to support this:

The difference being in this case, is that every stage of the Mason/Dobson saga has been 'managed' (very badly). What you're alluding to was 'administrative error' which at the time was embarassing, but not deliberate.
