| Quote ="Mrs Barista"Reported today that the clubs and RFL are at odds over the future structure. Clubs want an end to Super 8s format; RL chiefs in favour of licensing again - "A new structure enabling teams to win promotion, which could benefit the likes of Toulouse and Toronto will be voted on in June with big changes implemented in 2019". Interesting, get the feeling the game's at a real crossroads currently.'"
whatever changes they make they have to make it long-term this time, we can't keep ripping up the format every few years, its hard to attract new fans to the game as it is without having to explain ever more confusing format changes.
Going back to licencing would be a mistake given the work they are doing to grow the likes of Toronto & Toulouse, and there's Bradford with new owners and of course Rovers who could make it as SL teams. Doubt they'd give a licence to all 4, so promotion has to be still on offer.

The report referenced off the field requirements so I think that's why they call out Toronto and Toulouse as potentially benefitting, in the previous guise you got docked points IIRC if there were other SL teams in a certain radius. This is sort of supported by the Wakey chairman calling time on Belle Vue ie there are ground requirements being made again. Personally I'm not sure about 14 clubs, and the risk of increasing the cap could be more disparity in squad spend and therefore quality as the richest clubs can take full advantage but other clubs, with potentially less income as the pie is split more ways, being relatively disadvantaged.

You'd assume they are timing the changes to coincide with a new TV deal, which runs to the end of 2019 IIRC. There needs to be a substantial increase in that TV deal or the RFL need hauling out of Red Hall and shooting quite frankly.
The Salary cap will also need to increase at some point due to the pressures of Union and the NRL, but also the fact that the lowest paid young players in SL aren't actually on that much more than the Minimum Wage given the way that has increased and the cap has stayed stagnant, not when you consider the physical effects of playing SL and a short-career.

This 200 million pound tv deal only kicks in this year.
I think in 2015 when the deal was done the sl clubs dipped into to sort some money worries out that they had,not sure they dipped into last year.
Is 2019 or 2021 not sure ?

your right its end of 2021, only the RFL could tie us up for so long at a time when rights for other sports have gone upwards in price rapidly due to competition for rights.

The £300k into clubs bank accounts within a couple of weeks made it easy for many clubs to agree. koucash stated his displeasure and i think he's right that we gave it away too cheaply and too quickly. lenegan was concerned over the process, the clubs only had 24 hours notice of the meeting that put the offer on the table.
The increase was 30 per cent and didn't put it out to tender. given that SKY got that deal until 2021 and with RL doing well on the Tv figures the 30% increase on a poor amount last time isn't/wasn't that good a deal.
www.totalrl.com/ins-outs-super-l ... w-tv-deal/
The five-year deal breaks down as follows:
The amount being paid for club and international matches will be £182,200,000 in total.
Of that total, £146,760,000, or 80 per cent, will go to Super League clubs.
£14,576,000 or 8 per cent, will go to the twelve Championship clubs in the second tier.
£1,822,000, or one per cent, will go to the Championship One clubs.
£20,042,000, or 11 per cent, will be paid for Challenge Cup and internationals coverage.

Still not sure if Wakefield are just bluffing to force their council in to action to keep them in the city. But action does need to be taken about Belle Vue, its gone well beyond a joke.
I also dont think that it is a great idea to be parachuting Toronto in to SL anyway, while they are unbeaten in league1 so far, they havent started travelling yet (based in West Yorkshire) and I think its better for club and fans to grow organically. If they are winning the league easily this year they may play more young Canadians for example, whereas if they were moved straight to SL they'd buy up a load of 2nd rate Aussies at last minute.

Am I right in thinking Toronto are playing all early games away as the weather doesn't allow games to be played realistically til May?
If so this surely could never work in superleague?

Why can't it work? No difference to what they are doing in their league now
Besides Wigan and ourselves request bulk matches away around june/July so at least we will be sure of an away fixture then hopefully

Hull and Wigan end up with 4 or 5 away games in a row, they would have to play all there away games first half of the season.
The league they're in will have only played 5 rounds by the time they hit May so it is very different. Not sure how that league works to be honest but looks like they only play half the number of games.

no they wont
8-10 away games first followed by the bulk of 4 home games, then an away game followed by another 4 at home until they even out
the 8/8/8s format will be dumped in the next year or after i would expect too

Suppose we'll see better how it works next year when and if they get into the Championship.

No it's not "end of".
Why wouldn't Toronto work in Super League? So there'll be no away support to speak of but the same has gone for Catalans for years.
Toronto will be getting home crowds of up to 10,000 which would make them one of the top five or six supported clubs in Super League.

| Hi All,
New poster here (long time forum reader), so be gentle with me!
I believe we're entering an exciting time for the sport with the whole Toronto Wolfpack initiative and new, visionary (hopefully) leadership at the RFL. The game has suffered from blinkered parochial self-interest for decades, but I for one feel inspired when I listen to the vision (but pragmatism) of Eric Perez.
Marcel Proust once said: "The journey of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, it is in seeing with new eyes.” Add to that my old grandmother's mantra of "where there's a will, there's a way", and what's not to be enthusiastic about!
I have to add that I'm not a (much abused) 'Happy Clapper', but positivity, strong leadership and learning from the past can take our great sport forward.
There - I've got it off my chest!
(ps. I'll still be bricking it as I drive to Wigan tomorrow!!)
