| Lee Jackson was one of my favourite players and very good. Swain was an outstanding genuinely world class player. Berrigan had some tremendous games at 9 but typically spent most of his Hull career playing anywhere but there, his best position, and so has to be ruled out more thanks to his coach than himself. Having said that one player who was before my time stands out a mile. Tommy Harris has more Great Britain appearances as a Hull player than anyone else, won a Lance Todd Trophy on a losing team and clocked up over 400 appearances. By all accounts he was the original game changer of being a mobile, skilful hooker who could more than hold his own in open play. In those days hookers were first and foremost ball winners and that was all a lot of them could do. As a youngster I often heard the old timers commenting on any new number 9s that were speedy and skilful hoping that they would become the next Tommy Harris - basically he was the gold standard against which others were judged. He basically has it all, a long career, a great career as evidenced by his better than any other Hull player's representative record and that he was a genuine innovator as to how the position was played, Lee Jackson - much as I admire him came 30 years late on that. So for me Tommy Harris should be a certainty.
I would also like to put in a good word for Ronnie Wileman though, not for breaking Millward's jaw which frankly is nothing to celebrate at all but rather shameful, but for making a mug of Fairbairn in the JPS final and I also remember him embarrassing Georgina when he was playing for Wigan and Ronnie scored from near half way easily beating the soon to be world's most expensive player.

Harris, end of story, sorry but whilst Jackson is an old school-mate and I loved watching him coming up through the ranks into being a GB rep and playing for Sydney & Newcastle and winning the GF he just didnt have the presence and overall impact that Harris had on the Hull or even GB team and considered a 'great' by many.
Even amongst that magical team of Bomber's era he was a stand out, developing the role of the hooker into what we recognise today whilst still being a crafty ball winner in the scrum a great tackler, tenacious and great at backing up breaks, he had it all. Going on to be the most capped GB hooker (if we forget the 'plastic tests' that Roby has played in) he has half as many again GB caps over a longer period than Jackson did AND won a World Cup plus 3 Ashes series, being on the winning side against Australia in 6 out of his 10 tests against them. I would classify Harris as GB's greatest ever hooker but that's my opinion.
Harris only started playing RL at the grand age of 22, was sensational in his trial match and quickly followed up by his debut the following month.
With 443 matches, 56 tries and 2 championship winners medals he's one of Hull FC greatest ever players from home or abroad.
Jackson is deffo up there for inclusion in the short-list, he was fantastic for us, Swain, great work ethic, amazing tackler and leader, he probably just eclipses Jacko in overall contribution but Percival Thomas 'Bomber' Harris, is THE definitive hooker of any era, for me there is no doubt in the slightest and if there is any justice in voting on work ethic, skillset, contribution not only to the club but to the game internationally then Harris MUST be voted as our hooking option.
Nice obituary in the YP, www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/com ... -1-2393243

Not a lot to add to that re Tommy Harris except to say he is in my top 3 of all players I have seen play for the club having watched him since he began at Hull.
Perhaps his greatest game was in the 1960 Wembley final when he went into the match with a niggling shoulder injury which finally forced him from the field with over 15 minutes to play, having left the field concussed earlier in the match. His ovation from all the crowd as he walked back to the dressing room was something that will always be a great memory for me. His superb play and great courage justified the Lance Todd trophy even though Hull were hammered by Wakefield.
As has been mentioned earlier, in the 1950's in open play he played the typical No.9 game similar to what we witness today.

Eh?
Swain never started in the halves for us. Not even once.
As for Treister, he was great, but he barely played half a season. 3rd all time is ridiculous.

I'd have Harris,Wileman,Patrick,Dixon ahead of Treister and if we want to put players in like that then how about Lee and Godwin.

| When voting for the all time greatest team over a span of 150 years, I find it bordering on the ridiculous that some are suggesting a player in Dean Treister, who spent just half a season in a Hull shirt.
Tommy Harris was before my time, but his stats and reputation stand up to anyone elses
Lee Jackson was tremendous for Hull but left under cloud.
But of all all the players I have seen, Richard Swain would be the one I would say not only gave everything whilst on the pitch, what he gave was of the highest quality and he inspired others with his leadership.

Forgot about Mike Dixon tbh, always enjoyed watching him play. His turn of pace at times was electrifying, remember him going around Graham Steadman like he wasn't there. I agree about Treister, how on earth he's getting a place in anyone's top 3 is baffling.
Who was the hooker we got that came from Gateshead, he wasn't a bad player.

| Just a reminder to some of the people here that this supposed to be an all time greatest Hull team, not just the last 25 years which in any case haven't been historically that successful. Of course we all have favourite players that we have personally seen and no doubt have a natural bias towards them and being a relatively old git myself I have probably seen more than the majority of posters in here. None the less there are some old timers - from way before my time who have left an enduring legacy and have metaphorically been there and got the T shirts - whole wardrobes of them in fact. Just a suggestion but you can get an idea of how players were rated by their peers by the representative honours they collect. The best players tend to feature in the eras when the side was better - making finals and placing high in the league and to make an impact at Hull they need to play a decent number of games as well. So to some I would just say step back and think a minute - was your favourite an international when at Hull? Did he break any records? How many games did he play and did he shine in the big ones? If you honestly think that he ticks those boxes then go ahead but remember we are supposed to be looking back over more than 100 years and there may be better candidates.
As I said earlier in the thread Ronnie Wileman was a personal favourite of mine to watch but he's nowhere near the best to play for Hull, you can enjoy players whilst recognising their limits.
Sorry I had to rant on a bit but to suggest a one season player is somehow worth even comparing with a 25 time GB international is just that bit too far.

| good points and i would second all of that. go and read about some of the great players of the past and what they did for the club. its easy to vote for your favourite but this is not what it is really about. knockers bump and freddie miller do excellent jobs on these threads bringing up some of the old names.
also ask your parents and grandparents opinions, they'll have seen more players through the years

| Well we have only one Lance Todd winner at the club and he did serve the club for a lot of year Harris gets it for me.
A word of mention to another stalwart , Tony Duke not always first choice but managed to get a cup winners medal in the end of his very long one man club career. Certainly did as much Swain and for many years.

| Another one to add to the list is George Watt, Australian International whom played in all three of the famous 1946 'Indomitables' tests - named after HMS Indomitable an aircraft carrier that took the GB RL team to Australia via Suez and onto Freeantle. This was massive national news BITD and formed part of the bonding of relations between the two countries directly after the war. Also NSW 'inter-state' rep 6 times, 3 times premiership winner with 2 clubs (Balmain & Easts) and our club captain for the 48/49 season.
Made 90 appearances with 9 tries after signing with us at the age of 30 for the 1947 season playing until 1951 (there are some sketchy details that say he went back to OZ for one last season with Balmain in 1954 but I don't know if this is true) Was also our A team coach and remained in Hull until his death in 2010. Watt, along with many of his peers lost his prime years due to WWII.
One of the interesting facts and a show of his famed resiliance is that he had a terrible fall from a fairground ride in Sydney and was told he'd never play RL ever again, he went on from that moment to gain International honours and travel to the UK and become one of our own..
Now, tell me about Triester again

| This could be one of the closest votes.
In my time (40 years), I'd say the two stand out Hookers have been Lee Jackson and Richard Swain, of which I'd personally vote for Jackson - Hull lad, GB International and bacame the World Record Holder for the fastest RL try (9 seconds versus Sheffield Eagles).
Obviously, Tommy Harris should be one of the nominations too. As our only Lance Todd Trophy winner and hooker from a great Hull side, it's a shame there's limited footage and only a few fans who will have seem him play.

I believe George Watt, a prolific ball winner, passed on a few tips to Tommy Harris when Tommy signed for Hull. George played with 3 other Aussies in the late 40's - Ryan, Jackson and Gittoes. I remember watching George and the hooker that preceded him post WW2 but his name escapes me, Kavanagh perhaps?
After Tommy Harris, Lee Jackson would follow just in front of Swain and Watt.

| George Barlow was the Hull hooker pre WWII, debut 1930 and was in the 1939/40 squad and amassed 237 appearances, by 1938 Bob Kavanagh had signed, stayed til '49 with 78 app, in '39 Harry Wilkinson was signed and made 76 app leaving in 1952.
The war put a big strain on the Hull team and we borrowed quite a few players to play sometimes as many as 29 matches (44/45 season), in one of the war-league years we actually fielded 46 different players at one time or another. Something the great Eddie Waring recalled doing on his visits to the Boulavard as a manager and having to tap a fair few of Hull's players to make up the numbers.
Which if any of the two hookers played during the war I don't know but Wilkinson was the Hull hooker in the team that played in the 1946 Yorkshire cup final defeat.
