| Keegan for me even his understudy was good [Mally Owbridge went to Auss
Joe Oliver was a centre in all the trophy winning teams .
My late farther always said Bob Taylor was the best forward he ever saw and he watched Hull from 1918 to 1990 said could play the game or muck it out

| If you started watching FC in the 50s or 60s it has to be Arthur Keegan.
... 70s or 80s ... Gary Kemble
... 90s or 00s ... Steve Prescott
Colin Hutton, George Robinson, Paul Woods, Richard Gay and Shaun Briscoe also worthy of a mention.

| some excellent stuff on here so far. i'll let it run for another day or so then put forward the 5 candidates from the most popular choices on here. then there can be a short argument over this list, if you feel i've missed yours out - but this is where you need to really put your case forward strongly. once this is done the voting will go on a separate thread, so everyone notices it

| I saw Keegan play but was too young to really appreciate him. Kemble is the best I've seen and remember clearly. For sheer entertainment value, though he wasn't the best ever, nobody can compare with Paul Woods - there was always something happening when he was around.
Full back has to be one of the strongest positions for Hull throughout their history, or at least going back as far as I remember, though not all of them were representative players they tended to be above average and amongst the best players in the side.

Bit of a request here. This is great idea and something that will run well throughout the year can you though eventually feature the best goal kicker category please.

| Always remember John Gallagher and that great try he set up for us against Leeds in the Premiership Semi in 1991.
For me it has to be Kemble of the players I have actually seen play. Not a single player has ever got any where near him since.
I started watching in 76 and George Robinson was my first hero. Some years later I actually played against him and was over the moon to be on the same pitch as him. (how many "stars" will be playing amateur rugby in the future after a pro career)
For those who dismiss these kinds of threads I say the following.
Younger supporters reading about Keegan, Oliver, Kemble and seeing them nominated might actually feel inspired to read about them and actually learn about our history. Thats what this year is all about. However they learn about those players can only be good. So a thread where we all put our thoughts down is great and serves a great purpose.
Equally with at least one particular site I know having a vast archive of games going back decades, people might actually want to look these players up and see for themselves.
They are though pointless when it comes to votes as we will only vote for the star of our generation. So much so I wouldn't be surprised to see Motu getting more votes than Keegan or Oliver

yes of course - we will do that after selecting the main team - might also do a top tackler and hardman as well if there is interest, as well as top coach/manager

| Wooden-faced Woodsy stilled my 10 year-old beating heart most times. Reliably unpredictably reassuring, I recognised that even then during my very first games. Loved him.
But it has to be Kemble from the players I've seen.
And no mention for Shaun sexy-legs Briscoe? Briscoe the Brave and true.

| ok so going off the posts we have the 5 nominees for the position of full back
1. freddie miller - played for hull from 1932 to 1950. he was famed for his kicking in general play and this was the era of the kicking duel which he used to delight in when usually beating his opposite number. captained the club for a number of seasons. signed for featherstone in 1950 at the age of 35 and played another 3 seasons for them.
2. arthur keegan - played for hull from 1958 to 1971. played 365 games scoring 31 tries and kicking 318 goals. also won 9 GB caps and 2 England caps. took over the captaincy from whiteley and kept it until his departure. signed for bramley in 1971 and went on to play until the age of 39.
3. paul woods - a fans favourite for his whole hearted displays and hard man style, woods played for hull for only a relatively short time (1978 to 1981). the welshman played in the challenge cup final of 1980
4. gary kemble - the kiwi replaced woods and became hull's no.1 during the successful period of the early 80s. played from 1981 to 1987 scoring 180 points. played in 3 challenge cup finals, scoring a try in the cup final replay of 1982. also won 19 kiwi test caps.
5. steve prescott - played 2 stints for the club, (1989 to 1999, and 2001 to 2003). made 107 appearances scoring 56 tries, 197 goals and 3 drop goals. career ended by a serious knee injury whilst on duty for lancashire in the roses game.
please note i intend to include joe oliver for consideration as a centre
these are what i have come up with from the thread replies. however if you want to argue for a player to replace one of the nominees please state your case, and say which of the above he should replace. equally anyone else can counter argue this until we reach concensus (hopefully). i'll give it a couple of days for this to sort itself out but if you think george robinson, edward rogers, shaun briscoe or colin hutton should be included, then fire away

Would like to replace Freddie Miller with Joe Oliver as a nominee. Joe played both fullback and centre for the club but I am unable to find statistics showing games played in the 2 positions. My dad who watched from 1913-1968 said he was the best fullback he saw play for Hull and interestingly the club website which lists all past players has him as a fullback.
The following link gives a good summary of Joe's career.

| This is never going to be a precise art but its great to read supporters views and it certainly jogs a few memories. Fans will obviously go for the players they have seen and its hard to gage fans views of players before the era's you personally remember. Oliver is a good point of fact. You can only really read what folks back then said and unlike today thee were few means of this being recorded..
Back in the 60's you were often handed a player of the match sheet on which you voted, by filling it in. During that time its interesting to note that Arthur Keegan was voted fans player of the season for 7 consecutive seasons. And that in an era that included Sullivan, Davidson, McGlone, Rosenberg etc. that's going some.

| Keegan best all round fullback I have seen play. Although only young when I saw him play he stood out a mile and everybody who was older than me raved about him. Kemble was next best and of course woodsy was a cult hero of mine.

you could replace paul woods with oliver, leaving miller in the list if you so wish. out of the 5 nominees i would be tempted to drop woodsy, great player that he was. from what i read oliver started at full back and moved to centre later when miller arrived but won his international caps at centre and was at centre in the mid 30s golden period
