Thompson

Reasons being, as much as I like Shaul I think we look a lot slicker in attack with Rankin linking in. It's down to preferance whether you want the speed and evasiveness of Shaul or the hand and brains of Rankin, for me, for now, it's Rankin (just).
A Talanoa and Lancaster combo offers a bit more speed and dynamism than Yeaman/Talanoa. Could be seen as a defensive weak link, but I'd rather see us take to game to Cas rather than be defensive. Besides Webster and Clare (their probable opposition) don't really strike fear into me.
I'd also go with Westerman out wider. Last season he was very good in a ball playing 13 role, if Shaul is full back that's fine, but if Rankin is playing I think it's a case of too many cooks. We don't really have any other second rows with good hands who bust tackles and offload, so have Westerman play that role on the left and use Thompson as an extra prop.
Big bench. If Cunningham is fit we need him to be spelling Houghton. He can't keep doing 80 minutes, especially now Easter is upon us.
Just my 2 penneth. I'd be suprised if that's actually what happens, but it's what I'd like to see.'"
Really like that line-up, good work. Miss Thompson off the bench, but hopefully plenty of minutes for him either way.

| To anyone who watches us week in week out, how many minutes has Chris Green been getting in recent weeks?
I ask because he leads the team for average gain by quite some distance (amongst the forwards at least), but his carries are really low for the Salford, Wigan and Catalans game.
In fact the quality of his work looks really good.
1 error (a costly one against Salford admittedly)
0 penalties
98 tackles
6 misses
41 carries
346 metres
6 tackle busts
Does he need to up his work rate, or does Radford need to give him more minutes?

We'd struggle defensively as hookers are supposed to be able to tackle.

Hes a full back, surely he can tackle? And hopefully we'll be doing more attacking than defending, or may need to in second half if behind

| Hooker is very specialist position, I don't understand why fans think anyone will a bit of speed can play there, no other teams would use full backs at hooker. We saw against Leeds that Rankin didn't work at hooker.
If we need another hooker it should be Cunningham on the bench.

Yes it can be quite confusing asking a rugby player to come on when defences are tiring and pick the ball up from dummy half and run forward! I don't agree with playing players out of position , but I do think you need your best players on the field and I think Shauil offers much more than Cunningham. Greg Inglis, Darius Boyd, Jarryd Hayne to mention a few wouldn't have played a game for Australia if you didn't make exceptions

Not at hooker he doesn't, Cunningham is a better defender and distributer.
Hooking isn't just about running the ball or Kevin Penny would be playing there.
I agree about Shaul playing though, we should have tried Rankin in the centres in pre-season, if it had worked we could have two our our better attacking players in the side rather than one sat in the stands.

I'd be amazed if Shaul couldn't do a job as an interchange Hooker and cover other positions. If its a choice between Shaul or Cunningham on the bench, Shaul gets my vote all day long

They're supposed to be able to think and pass too but we make do.
Shaul on the bench isn't ideal but I agree that we need our best players in the 17 not in the stand. Rankin could move up to 9 and Shaul take over at FB in order to spell Houghton and he would also give us cover across the three quarters.

This is where we need an attack coach... to highlight & improve weaknesses in a player's game.

It's really not. I can tell you that Shaul's passing isn't great, and I reckon I could improve it if I worked with him, but I'm certainly not a coach. It's just a case of practice and technique.
An attacking coach will look at the team as a whole, working on set plays, players roles, option runners, suppoting the ball etc. He wouldn't and shouldn't be dealing with specific skills like how to pass a ball correctly.

Thank god somebody has brought this up. Shaul would be terrible at 9 for ANY amount of time for this very reason.

So..
What happens if a player's technique ,ie speed & accuracy is not up to standard?
Who would be responsible to improve this facet of their game?
It shouldnt be down to the player(s) , it should be -IMO.. a coach to recognise that the skill level,is not up to the standard required.

Come on surely anyone who knows the game can see Shaul isn't a hooker. Let's suppose his tackling is up to it (I don't think it is fwiw but I'll give him benefit of the doubt), being a decent hooker is about far more than just being able to run from dummy half. You need to have a good and varied passing game, you need to make decisions, call plays, preferably be able to kick a bit and to be able to do all of those things effectively you need good game awareness.
I think Rankin could potentially play there. A lot of skills that come from being a half back are transferable to hooker. Shaul would be hopeless there imo.

Not saying hes Hooker at all, just saying I'd have him on the bench rather than Cunningham, and if he was to spell Houghton, I'm pretty certain he could cause damage to a tiring defence and follow a few simple instructions. Which im certain would be simple coming from Radford, its not like we've loads of technical attacking plays

It is down to coaching yes, but an attacking coach wouldn't be coming in to work one to one with a player on something like that, it's basics. Jamie Shaul knows how to pass, I'm certain about that, it just needs practice in game situations. The more involvement he has in running plays in training etc the better it will become.
