| For anyone not sure what he has in his locker, type his name into Ytube.....his last few seasons in the NRL certainly provided evidence he offers quite a bit in both attack and defence.
End of the day, most Hull fans haven't seen much of him other than the derbies and not many of their players showed up in those games. I saw enough in the friendly at the start of last season to think he was decent and has much more pace and years ahead of him than Wade McKinnon. Looking forward to seeing him chime into the line.
Welcome Shannon!

| O'Hara ^
McD @ Rovers
Competent under the high ball + pressure. Despite this had an annoying tendency to always let the ball bounce when given the opportunity.
Decent feet but no burst of speed to make the break. Although we mainly saw him on damp/heavy pitches.
Joins the line well and may link well with Galea.
Without doubt the best thing he did for us, was his flick pass on Magic.
----------------
More than once thought he could skin the opposition line out wide only to get bundled into touch on the 1st tackle.
Reading of the game was very poor, but may have improved having no doubt watched a lot more SL games/tactics.
His best defensive moment may have been on the unfortunate Phil Bentham.

| Earlier this year there was talk of having Horne as our full back for next year. we needed someone else to at least cover or someone good enough for Horne to be cover for.
McDonnell did play for the Exiles, but then again so did, Lauaki, and Hodgson wasn't available,
as with all signings, looking forward to seeing what he can do in a black and white shirt. that's 3 rovers players we've signed now, Watts got better and better, Galea will be solid and committed no doubt, McDonnell being a recognized full back is a great thing, he has a lot of try assists on his stats which is promising

| I'm a bit unsure about this signing. He's clearly good in attack, but has often looked suspect under the highball and has made a few errors this way.
However, he's only 25 and it often takes players a while to adjust to SL when they come over from the NRL.
He should be getting better service in attack than he did last year - allowing his strengths to come to the fore.
However, we were all fairly uncertain about signing players such as McGoldrick and Aspinwall last season and they both turned out to be great for us, so I'm not going to bash McDonnell before he comes. He also has a good relationship with Gentle - family friends - which should stand him in good stead.
I think he'll probably just get the nod over Horne, but this means that there will always be competition for places and they both know that they'll have to be at their best to get in the side regularly.
McDonnell also gives us a bit of cover on the wings, too. We only have 3 'proper' wingers - Briscoe, Crookes, Lineham - and McDonnell has played there in the past, so I could imagine him switching to Wing with Horne at fullback if 2 of those 3 get injuries (I'd rather keep B. Crooks in the centres and Whiting elsewhere), so this signing offers us a bit more depth in the backs.

| Quote ="Gerrum on side ref"On the face of it seems to be the longest ever "done deal" before finally being announced. But several other supposedly "done deals" fell through because players could not sign deals until September, giving them plenty of opportunities to change their minds before signing the dotted line.
I think having gone back to Australia if a good enough deal had come in the NRL he would probably have taken it, =#0000FFI don't buy the statement on the website of fending off other NRL offers to land his signature, AP even said on Sportstalk that he has found himself at a loose end, so any NRL offers must have been really cr@p. Hopefully we're not paying him anywhere near the rumoured figure.
Anyway personally think we have got a good signing here, he now knows what to expect in the UK and NRL players often get better in their second year over here. Specialist fullback is what we needed and now have, and at 25 is the right age as well.
Welcome aboard Shannon'"
I reckon you're right. I thought all along with the stories of him going back to the NRL that there was a very small handful of clubs where he'd have a chance of a first team spot, so I would have thought any offers would have reflected that.
That being said, I agree with those who say he is probably about the best available, so you can't knock the club at all. Hopefully he'll do well for us.

If anyone can get the best out of him PG will.
People are pointing out he played for the exiles but after Hodgson got injured there wasn't many other choices available, and IIRC he was average at best in the first game. He is of course a Hull player now and will get my full support just like the rest of them.

| Good Signing, deffo the best available. On his day he looked good last year and PG must feel he can can raise his game and consistency up a few notches. If he can we will have a very good full back and it will also be a real challenge to Rich Horne. I don't think Horney will just roll over and we might just see him hit some form too. Rich showed good form at times last year, running close for MOM on a few occasions, and I think they will bring the best out in each other. Will be good to watch them compete for the shirt. Welcome to a great club Shannon.

| Looking forward to watching the kid run out in Black and White, dont know too much about him but one of the guys i work with daily is an HKR season pass holder for years and he recons we have signed a complete FB !!
contrary to most on here he sees him as solid in defence, reads the game well, good under a high ball and fast as ferk and joins the line at exactly the right time, he says he has more potential than the last loser we had...
and my one memory of him is he is clearly a fast un so yet more speed in the line, all looks good!!
in PG I trust and look forward to this kid being another class full back in black and white.......

having seen all his games for us to be honest your mate is not far off but not quite right, despite what some on here are saying he is usually flawless under the high ball, he had a nightmare match in the derby but caught everything else in every other game, he is good linking up in attack particularly on the left for some reason, he does read the game well and comes into the line well and backs up well. he is very light weight in defence and his one on one tackles are pretty much non existant. that said tackling from a modern fullback isn't a high priority nowadays, he will do a good solid job for you without being a world beater

Thanks for the info mate!!!
agree that one on one there are few fbs that are super solid and maybe thats something PG will work on , however i guess at mid 20s he wont change his tackle style too much .
thanks again

| Was more bothered about losing Watts, who does have the ability to be top class, McDonnell is a reasonable SL player, but not at the money he wanted (if rumours are correct). As said, he is good under the kick, but the worst tackling FB I have seen at Rovers.

Looks like that could be beat next year if hall plays at FB, possible the worst FB I have seen Hull in the last few years.
Saying that he last few comments about McDonnell from rovers fans seem fair, hopefully he will improve at hull with better coaches and players.

As I have posted umpteen times on our forums, IMO Hall will be a mistake at fullback. As for McDonnell improving under better coaching, how long did he play in NRL under good coaching. I think he is as good as he is likely to get, which is average at SL and 2nd grade in NRL.

| Well this is a great recommendation for McDonnell:
Quote ="His Bobness"
Do these people actually attend all Rovers games particularly away? If they did they'd know McDonnell has saved 6 certain tries with his one on one defence.
McDonnell is the only player we have with real genuine pace, he can step off both feet and has an elusive running style only bettered by Tomkins in Super League. Yes he really is that good. His 'bat on' to help set up the winning derby try was quality, who else in our team would have done that? Nobody. So who will take his place, Sheriff?
The skills McDonnell has are pretty rare that's why teams will pay players like him a little more....except us apparently.
It is a crime that Rovers unearth such a talented player (that's the hard bit) and then let him go because we can't compete with Widnes or whoever.
If we are cutting our cloth fair enough then we need to prioritise. That means keeping your quality home growns, Taylor, Welham, Lovegrove, Watts, Cox etc but in truth most of the rest could be replaced at reasonable cost. The one's who probably couldn't be replaced and definitely not on the cheap are Dobson, Green and.....McDonnell.
The pivotal positions of 1, 6, 7, 9, 13. that's where you need quality and where you pay to get it if necessary. We are very lucky that we have class players in all those positions....and we have the cornerstone of a fine pack, the home grown/local players, Taylor, Josh Hodgson, Lovegrove, Cox, James Green.
And we have a brilliant 100% commited coach in Craig Sandercock who will be even more important to our long term well being if we are cutting our cloth and putting faith in youth. Honestly if I were Widnes I'd put a tempting offer his way he would be a million times better than Denis Betts and maybe we'd decide we couldn't afford him too.
We've got a good thing going at Rovers if only people would wake up and I include the board who are excellent at running a club but not so good at knowing a good player when they see one.
Numpties on this forum have rubbished McDonnell, Mika, Welham and worst of all Sandercock. Well they are entitled to an opinion but as I have said all season Rovers have the most talented exciting team we have had so far in Super League. We're starting to see it. We are close, very close, to breaking through to a level as good as anyone outside of Wigan & Warrington. But we cannot be letting our best players go to Widnes whatever the numpties say.'"
Mind you, His Bobness is the worst predictor on RLFans, so what would he know?

A couple of things I find difficult to get to grips with in that quote:
1) Lovegrove in the homegrown/local category.
2) A team who just finished 10th, 2 points behind a team docked 6, winning only 1 from the last 10 games of the season, and who have since sold 2 of their best players, are on the verge of being as good as anyone in the league bar Wigan and Wire?
