Let's just say, I believe the simplest way to try an explain for people such as Mr Airlie Street would be:
First of all find the difference between the two figures (so let's take the 5500 and 12000 in question). Difference is 6500.
Then, divide the 'difference' by the original number. So, 6500 divided by 5500, which equals 1.18.
Then, simply multiply by 100 and there you have it.
118.18.

Actually, you are.

Think of it this way, if 1500 * 6 = 9000 for a 600% increase, then 1500 * 1 = 1500 for a 100% increase, which clearly isn't the case.
I think where people are going wrong is calculating the end number as a percentage of the original, rather than using the increase on it's own as should be done. |

Correct
or simply put
5500 x 118.18 = 6500 (new fans) + 5500 (old fans) = 12000
And I thought I was crap at maths......
