Do people not think that signing a player of the calibre of Ellis would help us to attract other quality players?

Yes they do but if we want to be a club challenging for honours then surely this is the quality of player we have to be looking at. We are at last being linked with world class players and people are complaining at having to use up too much salary cap to get them.

if ellis chose to come to us it would prove PG and AP can sell the future of the club to players from the very top drawer

Possible scenario:-

New SO - Paid for by Horne
New centre - Paid for by Martin/Unused £60k
New prop - Paid for by Moa

So keep Ogre and miss out on Ellis or sign Ellis and lose Ogre and move Tickle to prop. That is assuming Ellis wants to come which I have my reservations on.

Four things will decide this move, Salary, Ability to win Medals, Relationship and Geography.

Assuming it's Hull v Leeds, then...

Salary: If it's down to just payments within the Salary Cap, then it should be an even race as I assume both max out on their cap and Leeds would need to juggle just as much as Hull. Not sure what other benefits are also allowed with in a players contract, e.g car, house etc

Medals: Leeds would take this one. Their record is far superior, except in the Challenge Cup. In the past 34 years, Leeds have only won one Challenge Cup, Hull have won two.



Relationship: Ex Leeds player who only left to play in the NRL would suggest a return to Leeds. The PG factor may help, however Leeds may entice GE with a promise of a future Coaching role if he's interested.

Geography: The wetherby factor may be convenient. However, if he's just lived in Oz away from wetherby, he's not going to get too hung up on an extra 50 miles travel.



At the end of the day, I expect he'll sign for Leeds. However, I agree with Staffs FC that GE is the type of player we should be looking to sign going forward. Hope the club go for it, but also keep other options open, so we don't end up without a Plan B or C and panic buy in Januray 2013. Trust PG and AP to sort us out.

a handy scenario could be, we let briscoe join wests a year early, they let ellis leave a year early, both players agree with respective clubs, done deal....hopefully

Still think we need a quality centre. Possibley GE Could cover the centre if we really needed it.

But i still think we need to throw money at sam to try n persuade him to stay.

Ogre was outstanding in his first season. I thought his performances dropped slightly last year after Willie Mason arrived

I don't see how anyone can view signing someone, who if they came would likely be the best player in our team, as anything but positive for a club.
Let Pearson, McRae et al worry about navigating the cap, I'm sure they understand the intricacies better than us anyway. (well they do me for one). I'm also sure they'll understand other areas need strengthening, along with Gentle, and make plans to do so. I can't imagine, if the ellis signing came off, the 3 of them would stand back, congratulate each other and think "that's us done then, we've arrived".

Aren't some people overstating just how good Ellis is? There's no doubt he's an excellent player, but I don't think he's any better than, say, Stephen Kearney was when he came to us. If Ellis would cost considerably more than Kearny (dunno if that's the case, though the tone of this thread seems to suggest it is), then I don't think it would make sense to sign him.

Signing quality english players is very important now, with the raising of the salary cap your top class aussies are going to watch silly money

the thing about eliis is, 1. he's a TOP player no doubt, 2. he's ENGLISH and as far as im concerned top english palyers are like gold dust for a team like us, youve only got to look at the england national team to realise that the best english players all play for the top teams......3.he'll go to the highest bidder on a 3 year deal.....
would be a great siging for a club like us, , the kearney siginng propelled us to CC victory and i have no doubt that he also brought the young kids on with his proffesionalism and attitude etc.... as im sure ellis would if we could sign him

Not sure I agree, Fitz & Orgre have different roles, I admired Fitz work ethic however he rarely bust a tackle!! A few weeks ago I would not have particularly wanted to resign O'Meley as he was quiet back end of last season and started making a lot of errors, he never started this season with a bang either, however the last few weeks he appears to be getting back into some form, if he maintains this I will be happy if he resigns.

If it's between Leeds and hull there won't be a bidding war, GH will not pay over the top and generally wouldn't get involved in one.

From pre season Leeds are under cap this year (don't know by how much) but was stated in Pre season we had funds for a extra player if one was available. I think whoever get him will have a quality player
