| Quote ="cod'ead"I reckon what we are seeing now is Richard's head is finally in the right place. Last season I seriously doubted that he would ever really get over his neck injury. Speaking as someone who fractured C6 and then attempted to get back playing again, I could empathise. After physically recovering from a potential career-threatening injury, he then had to get his head around playing again, if you also throw in his diabetes diagnosis, that's enough to cause anyone to question their own abilities.
Last season I seriously doubted that he'd be mentally fit to play the game to a decent standard again. I'm pleased to say he has proved me wrong. Rich has never been an organiser, I doubt he's even a thinker, he's more of an instinctive player and although that instinct can be problematic, it can also lead to spontaneous bouts of brilliance that leave opposing players mesmerised.
I now believe that he will continue improving, simply because he's got his head around his situation. Whether we'll see him back to his best is debatable but for now at least, I'm not disappointed with what we've got.'"
Fantastic post, sums it up perfectly

Indeed, I think part of the problem for FC fans is we are so used to having halves that defend as much as (or in Horne's case, more) than they attack. It really isn't the job of the 6 and 7 to be defending all the time, but it's something FC fans have become accustomed too, probably since the Entat/Hasler days?

I don't expect a half to be a defensive powerhouse, but I thought he was below the required standard. That said his team-mates weren't a whole better I suppose and that may have exposed him more than usual.
Certainly looks good ball in hand and as I said was better than either of the Wigan halves or Dobson on Monday. Turning into a good signing despite a slowish start.

I wish we could, once and for all, get rid of this perception that the RFL give anything to clubs, all we get for Horne is, effectively, an extra £50k of cap space, we still have to make the money to pay Horne (or whoever), it is simply a bit of "wriggle room" for clubs that have kept players for a longer period than some others.
It's not a gift, a freebie or anything of the sort.

Tbf,Phelps has improved week by week.Just a shame he keeps picking up 'niggles',though it sounds like he could be ok for the Derby.

| With regards to the 50k added to the cap for the 10 years service, is there another cap dispensation? I read on the Wigan board that IL claimed O'loughin was practically off cap through the two exemptions?

| Rich is doing nothing other than playing his normal game alongside better players around him for a while thus is getting more quality ball, and at his age still has a load of footie left in him, jeez he is getting back to form whilst in his prime years what more do some want ???
he will be with FC for some time to come thankfully and he will repay 10 fold the faith the club had in him thats for sure!!
The lad is a quality footballer FFS

| Horney has been a great servant to the club and I for one would keep him at the club but only on a reduced contract. He deserves reward for his commitment and I'd be happy to get him into the coaching staff when he finally hangs up his boots. He's still young enough to find some form and finish his playing career on a high ( )

| Who cares if he is on a reduced deal? We save 50 grand of his wages from the cap anyway so what is the big deal? I'd keep him but just for another year to see how he goes

But if he gets a £50k pay cut, We'll then save the £50k elsewhere like Yeamo for example thus saving £100k on the cap effectively... That's an extra player!!

I didn't think so. He created one clear cut chance on the back of a Wigan purple patch which caught them off guard and offered nothing of note for the rest of the game.. Rovers never looked like scoring and were awful defensively.
Personally i think Green is less than average but he may improve eventually!!!

IIRC it's actually 50% of the wages of any player with 10 years or more service, up to a MAXIMUM of £50k total for all qualifying players. Otherwise spot on. There's no extra cash involved, just permission to spend a bit more if we want.

Correct, Kosh.
Yeaman joins Horne under this ruling next season as it will be his 11th Super League season. Still just the £50k, though, which is per club rather than per player.

Yes. The cap is £1.65m but effectively £1.7 if you have a player or players with 10+yrs of service and a collective salary of £100k plus.

Aye. I don't know how clearly i phrased it, but meant that reducing horneys wage wouldnt be as beneficial as saving £1 for every £1 we don't pay him... As far as the cap is concerned, we may aswell pay him 100k, saving the full 50k from the cap.

Or pay him £50k (saving £50k cap) and get £25k long service discount and save the other £25k from Yeamo's salary thus, effectively, having an extra £100k for 2012.
It is exactly, as you say, like saving £1 for £1 because we have another player eligible for the discount!!

It would. And he was one our better players against hudds. I would keep him on for sure, and I think he and the club know it will be a reduced deal. But still worth it IMO. I want Richard to be part of FC for life. He is a talisman for our club, but not as good as he was admittedly
