Horse Manure DOES smell and DOES contain bacteria that could make you ill if you ingested enough of it.

My daughter's been going to riding classes for around 6 or 7 years, so I've had frequent visits. Granted it's nowhere near as smelly as dog/cat/etc. muck (for some of the reasons you mentioned) but I'd hardly call it odourless.


Still not something you'd want to step in though. And TBF you have to be pretty close to most other kinds of mess for the smell to be really offensive.

How much would you need to ingest

Quite a bit I imagine, but it certainly is a lot less harmful than dog or cat crap!

TBF, in the week, I lodge on a farm which has horses and the envitable pile of horse manure as a result and there is virtually no smell. That said, I've never been tempted to get too close.

It doesn't smell anywhere near as much as other animal manure, but the original suggestion was that it doesn't smell at all, which simply is unture.

yes, maybe I should have said very little smell & not completely odourless but compared to domestic home pets & human pee & excrement no were near the same. And as my points are pertaining to cod'eads comment regarding why the police should have to pick up their own horse poop I think it was relevant. For cod'ead to compare horse poop on the road once in a blue moon to police stopping or fining people for doing their business on the street is just a nonsense.

Why is it?

If dog owners have to pick up their animals droppings, then why can't we expect the same of Horse owners?

In fact, Horse owners should actually have to pay a fee for using the public roads, they cause damage, leave mess and there are hudreds of miles of bridleways available, there really is verry litte need to ride a horse on public roads, and certainly not for anything other than a short distance to access the nearest bridleway.

All UK taxpayers pay for the 'upkeep' of the roads, not just motorised vehicle drivers. 'Road fund license' which I assume you are referring to is a misnomer, it is Vehicle Excise Duty & does NOT directly pay for road maintenance. Funding is from grants from central government & from council tax locally.
Everyone has equal right to use the road whether that be a car, van, bike or horse.
And as a final note from me, if a horse cr'ps on the road, walk around it, simplez

We once went to Wembley on what could best be described a a charabanc, it had no bogs, just a bucket. Not wanting to waste any drinking time in London, we never stopped on the way down. One lad would stand in the open doorway, bucket in hand, while another would hold his waist to prevent him tumbling onto the road. Then one really bright spark had a Baldrick moment. He deduced that the inspection hatch in the middle of the coach floor, would offer direct access to the road beneath. What he forgot was that this was a front-engined, rear wheel drive bus. So he lifted the inspection hatch and poured about 1.5 gallons of , directly onto the propshaft, soaking himself and the back half of the bus in the process.
