Briscoe's passing is just as bad as Yeamans so wouldn't like to see him in the centres. Hopefully it will be Whiting and Turner in the centre spots for the Cats game.

It's the utility tag I don't like.

Sure have a player who can cover fb, wing or centre but he still has a preferred position.

I'd say Briscoe is still a winger, Heremaia a hooker and Whiting a back rower just because they've played else where doesn't make them utility.

Fair point, but it's like people saying they want Horne as a squad player and to cover injuries. Now is he a 6 or a fullback now? Whiting has always been known as our utility player but for me as you said he's a back rower now and I'd like him to concentrate on that position. For me I'd give it to Horne as I don't want him as our fullback or 6, squad/utility at the most with Horne from next season hopefully.

That's just saying they don't want him in the 17 but they know he's contracted.

Of course they mean something! Those players will have come to a mutual agreement with the club, they can't just leave and the club can't just say "off you pop".

Cookes "contract" meant a lot didnt it....contracts mean nothing nowadays...players can get out of them if they want.

The fact they have to get out of them means they mean something.

The salary cap means clubs are more likely not to put up a fight but if they want they can dig their heals in (eg Carvell).

If contracts didn't mean anything why we looking to pay transfer fees?

We seemed to have played a blinder this season clearing bad contracts, rumours are agreement is in place to clear Seymours at the end of the season too. It can be done but costs money, if you offer the player a lump sump and they have a deal in place at another club they will make more money, ie Ellis and O Carroll. I remember Gentle thanking AP for stumping up the money to pay Obsts contract off at the beginning of the year.

We could have paid nothing to get rid of Ellis and O'Carroll, regular first team rl and a pay rise at their new clubs could have been enough.

It's when there not wanted by another club and they don't want to leave it becomes a problem, if you can't come to a agreement (Dykes) and can't find a law abiding reason to sack them (Hutch) and want room on next years cap you have to pay them off in full.

I agree, but however we did it, we have done well to clear those bad contracts. I suspect we must have paid some money out though, especially on Ellis.
