realistically, the true expectation for a big club like FC should be an equal or better finish than this term ! with new faces, more luck with fit halves i think we can be a top three shout next year

The one we have at present did well this year with a play off finish to add to his contract extention he recieved which means that will not happen any time soon ...and if we have an equal or better finish next term he will again continue to run the rosta I hope, you know were quite lucky to have a committed young british coach at our club and have never really understood the thinking that bringing in an Aussie would make us champions overnight that some believe

Maybe because the clubs who have won SL in recent seasons have overseas coaches, or that the last 4 teams in SL this season have overseas coaches, or maybe just because agar isn't good enough

Big issue for us is that we do not produce enough top quality players ourselves. wigan, saints and leeds are packed with quality players who have come through their ranks so are less costly for the club. It's the main reason their squads look so much better than ours for the same spend, plus our recruitment and retention in recent years has been below par, compounding the issue

I expect it will be a tight contest between our two bitterest of local rivals next year just as i was this season..

Correct ! It's also compounded by the fact that we seem to big up our not so good players much more than they deserve. They end up with 2 and 3 year contracts without being much good. Think things are changing a bit mind.

Totally agree !! We've spent way too much time and money on players like G Horne, R Horne, Lee, Yeaman, Washbrook, Radford, King and a few more who I'd much rather forget, all because they're "local lads".

We seem to celebrate and "big up" players who are very ordinary while Saints, Wigan and Leeds are promoting proper SL standard young players and getting rid of the rest.

Add that to the really woeful recruitment at times in recent seasons and a coach who wouldn't get anywhere near being in charge of one of the real top four teams and it's easy to see why we are where we are.

Sometimes, your determination to make a point does your argument more harm than good when you go too far and make ridiculous claims.

Yes because they're all fantastic players and Yeaman and Horne were well worthy of their 3/4 year deals weren't they !!

FYI, I don't have any "determination" thanks. HTH. I say it as I see it and all of those players that I quoted have been "bigged up" way too much because they are "local".

Compare them to their counterparts at the big clubs that regularly win silverware and you should see exactly what I'm saying.

To be fair to Carl_Spackler, the three players he highlighted have all been picked for rep footy whilst playing for FC. I agree with the other players you named though.

The 3 I highlighted are/were different class to the others you mentioned, and the club have been spot on to invest in them. Horne may appear to now be past his best, but he has given us several years as one of the best players in SL. Yeaman has been every bit as good as the likes of Senior in his time IMO, and King had as much talent as I've seen in a front rower, he just didn't have the application to match.

I see the point you were trying to make, which is why I said you damaged it by including these 3 as examples of 'ordinary' players. They have been very good players for us and certainly much better than the other company you named them in.

So do I. There just seems to be an exaggeration to make a point at times, as also evidenced in the backrow complaints, that undermines any sense spoken.
