| I like the way they switch the camera angle so you can't see how forward Hall's pass to Yeaman was for his first try...

Agree, especially as his linesman called it forward and he over ruled it. Wonder if we could claim compensation for missing out on a cup run?

| To be fair if this try is in the first minute of the game it wouldn't be mentioned as much. I do think referees should be accountable for shocking decisions like this though, whether they be game breakers or not. If a player makes a mistake they face a disciplinary panel, but referees... ? Sod all, I'll bet.

| The most forward pass ever, but being a Salford fan and watching abysms decisions go against us i.e. the raynor knock on try at the willows and the amount of forward passes Wigan got away with the other week. It makes a refreshing change to have a decision go our way. What I can’t understand being relatively new to watching rugby league why the liners do nothing whatsoever in a game? Have they been told not to join in or do they forget that there arms are aloud to lift the flag up now and again?
ps good luck for the season

The linesman didn't call it forward, he hesitated but then carried on. I always though for a forward pass the linesman had to hold his flag upright in front of his chest??? and there is now way the ref could have seen it, so why stand him down???

Anyone with knowledge knows that there are no linesmen in RL only touch judges. The touch judge, linked to the referee via radio, paused as the pass was made as if to question it. Who knows - maybe he even said as much into his microphone ? In any case the referee has ultimate responsibility for decisions taken by the officials. According to the HDM the match commissioner's report suggested Smith had the final say. We'll never know - but Smith presided over a sh ite decision.
Never mind press on regardless.

I think it might have been Yeaman's second. A great little drift play that you don't see too often.

It's a play that a few teams use (basically a reverse wedge with the front man crossing in front of the second), but I haven't seen it very often at the top level. If the defence doesn't read it as intended the receiver will probably be smashed. If they do bite though, it's very difficult to do anything about.

| Quote ="Staffs FC"You can see the TJ stand his ground presumably as he's calling it but Mr Big Smith thinks he'll overrule it even though he's in a far worse position.
'"
Right, sorry if this has been cleared up after the post I am quoting but I havent got that far yet.
Anywhoooo... the TJ didnt stand his ground at all. He stopped because he was in line with play and then carried on running as play moved on. If he had thought it was a forward pass he would have stopped quickly, put the flag to his chest in a vertical position and told Ian Smith through the mic. Also had Smith not seen him the TJ would have pulled up about a metre short of the goal line flag as the ball was grounded and before awarding the try Smith would have checked both his TJs and on seeing one short of the in flag he would have gone to inquire. As this did not happen the TJ must have run through to the back of the in goal area signaling all is OK with the build up or at worst he must have been stood on the flag signaling that he did not see the grounding but the rest of the play was fine.
The pass was a mile forward but that is not Smith's fault. As a referee you get into positions sometimes where it is impossible to tell and at that level the TJ's should be getting ones like that every time. The fact he had to take a step or two after the ball had been passed should have been enough. But as I say, to blame Smith is stupid (although IMO I dont rate him as a SL standard referee) and all blame for that lays on the TJs shoulders as it happened right in front of him whereas Smith was 10 meters back at an angle.

The post-match press reporting of the Match Commissioner's report suggests otherwise. I suppose it depends whether or not you believe the Hull Daily Mail. Not sure why they would make it up to be honest.
If Smith replied down his mic 'play-on' after initial contact from the TJ then the TJ may well have taken that as read thereby negating any further action by him as the play continued. All speculation of course.

I'm not saying it was great, but you seemed to be pretending they didn't happen. As poor a performance as it was, they were still the highlights and would have stood out even in a much better showing.

Point taken but the thread title just seems all wrong. Tbh regardless of whether we had scored 6 great tries we were still embarrassed on the day.
