I can't really understand the glee that this is being greeted with.

To me this just looks like Pearson putting a brake on a little of the euphoria that's greeted his arrival and perhaps measuring expectations down a little to allow his new team some time to bare fruits from their new systems and practices.

The two clubs positions are fundamentally different and both boards will obviously be working to get the most out of what they've got.

Pearson merely seems to be stating that it's going to take more money over a longer period of time for Hull to get to where they want to be. He's recognised that the failure of the previous board to get the team to perform to their maximum both on and off the field was down to under investment in the playing side of things. This led to a fall in attendances and merchandising.

He appears to me to be saying that as well as the financial commitments he was prepared to take on for off field matters he can now see that it's also going to take more more investment to improve things on the pitch and that he feels that if this can be achieved then attendances and merchandise sales will rise. Seems fairly reasonable to me.

This is going to take a little longer than he thought and he seems to be making a statement of intent that this is what he hopes to achieve.

Which clubs make money in Rugby League? Leeds, maybe Wigan. That's possibly about it. There's probably only the opportunity for three, maybe four clubs to actually turn a profit. Pearson wants to get into one of those positions, the objective is for the club to run as a profitable business.

The situation at Rovers is for us to not necessarily make money but to stop haemorrhaging it and become largely self sufficient.

Quite possibly, but it's an interesting/strange one. I don't know the mechanics of how they've done it because I've never been interested enough to buy a set of the accounts, but I've always suspected that it would simply be some kind of (re)valuation reserve on the other side of the balance sheet (mainly because I just can't see how it could justifiably be put through the P&L as a form of income). The article suggests it may have been done just to increase the balance sheet total for a selling price, which could fit in with that.

Pearson's comment isn't really consistent with that though, IMO. The only reason I can think of for the reduction being done over time is to smooth out an effect on profits, if it was just a corresponding reduction of a reserve I don't see a major reason why it wouldn't just be done all at once.

I think this is only a story in regard to how it shows just what the last regime was all about.
When everyone was singing JR's praises for his excellent marketing I always thought that it was true but only in so far as he was clever at spinning how all the management team cared about the club whereas they were only ever really interested in lining their pockets at the expense of the long suffering supporters.
This news just confirms that once they’d killed the golden goose that was it, they were off as the club held no interest once it had been milked dry.
I think the AP angle is solely a PR exercise. There’s no way he didn’t know the situation was like this when he bought the club and it would be a hard road back. This release is just another nudge to all those who have not renewed season passes that they owe him some support and to get their hands in their pockets.
