We've played for years with sub standard outside backs, if indeed Gleeson as signed and this kid is indeed ready for the first team then let him prove himself on the wing outside Yeamo, just like Briscoe has.

I thought Gary Connolly and Paul Newlove was both more than half decent at their peaks. Scott Gibbs and Jonathan Davies played pretty well too.

That's an exhaustive list, especially when Davies was more a 5/8 and Connolly a full-back

Connolly was more of a centre than a FB, he played much more at centre than FB.
I would add Senior into the centres, in his prime was a fantastic centre who could have done well in the NRL.

Senior is, always has been and always will be a fast lad who was not big enough to play 2nd row. It's come to something if we're happy replacing creativity with brute strength

He should be more pleased having a player there to support him through his transition to the first team, he can learn a lot from Gleason!

That's why I said nearly 30 years.
Schofield was probably the last truly creative British centre I've seen

If that is anywhere near true, we have some serious problems with our recruitment policy and salary structure

Not sure i agree entirely with that. In that time we've recruited Kearney, Swain, Berrigan, Dykes, Head, Fitzgibbon, O'Meley to name but a few legends of the game.
Our biggest problem is recruiting the cheap option as a coach every time.

Or could our problem be that we pay too much for the big name players because the board thinks its puts bums on seats but then dont have enough to buy the rest of the squad?

Or possibly paying too much for average/squad players?

Definately.
On the previous point by Seb i actually don't think we've spent enough on the right players previously. Monaghan for example when we needed a 7 and were outbid by Wire. We should have broken the bank for him and not stook to our wage structure.

| From Wigan's mod on their board:
Quote ="ABP'"Meh, I'm quite content with his departure. He came in, did the job and contributed towards winning the Grand Final last season.
Whether this situation would have happened or not, we were in the mindset of replacing Gleeson opposed to building a team round him & it's just happened a year or so sooner than we had planned.
In regards to Gleeson himself, I don't think we've heard the last of him being in the headlines...And I highly doubt that any of them will be Rugby related. The lad needs to sort his life out one way or another.'"
Last paragraph is interesting.
