| Quote ="trys'r'us"Tony is a fullback. Again, like it or not, that's his best position. Always has been and always will be. And he offered/offers more than Briscoe did, so he was, and would have remained/did remain, first choice. He's not very good at hooker. He's not anywhere near good enough to be playing there regularly and he would be behind Lee and Berrigan for that role. He's not a winger (interesting the people who apparently themselves when he has to take a catch at fullback would be happy to see him on the wing, where it is even easier to target the player with kicks) and he isn't a centre either. He's not played in either role for very long and for good reason. The only other position he could possibly play in the backs is at 6, and the last few games he's had there (for us, NZ and Cas) weren't, to say the least, impressive performances. Again, just one more time in case it finally sinks in, he's a fullback and has been throughout his career.
Finally, Briscoe's not a 'very good' fullback. He's an average, 'solid' fullback, the sort of fullback we seem to persist with in this country and the sort of fullback that will continue to see us embarrassed at the top level.
If you're happy with accepting average 'solidity', that's your choice. It's not mine though, and nor is it the choice of the top coaches/clubs in the game.'"
Possibily the biggest load of rubbish I've read on this forum in a while.
If the arguement is between Briscoe and Motu in terms of an all round player, then there is a debate, but in the full back position Briscoe wins hands down.

I'll certainly try.
Quote ="Mrs Barista"IMO a specialist full back can deal with the high ball. '"
Something which Tony does on the vast majority of occasions. And it's a fairly minor part of the game anyway. It's not often that you'll get more than two or three a game going to the fullback and if he deals with 90% (I'd be alright with less, TBH, if they don't cost us) that's fine with me. As I've said plenty of times, it's an area he could be stronger in, but it's nowhere near the problem it's made out to be.
Quote ="Mrs Barista"I'd be fine with Briscoe's "averageness" if that meant being able to defuse a high ball, clear his goal line, defend courageously and back up Richard Horne for try after try
'"
All of those things you mention are fairly minor parts of the game (except clearing the goal line, but I suspect you mean that differently to how I'd view it, as Briscoe certainly isn't good in that area AFAIC). Not the attributes that should be looked for as the most important things for a fullback, yet they remain so in this country. And we wonder why we get our s handed to us every time we come up against the Aussies, who play fullbacks who have a little more to their game. Maybe we could learn something from that.
Quote ="Robbo4"I'd just like to throw into the mixing pot that this long held belief that Motu is somehow a hooker is complete rubbish IMO. He cant pass for a start.'"
But he played there for NZ a couple of times. He [imust[/i be a hooker.
(He can pass, but it's short, defence-splitting passes in a tight space that he's good at rather then long, fast, flat, accurate passes, repeatedly, from dummy half, where he's not good at all.)
Quote ="BalearicHullFan"Possibily the biggest load of rubbish I've read on this forum in a while. '"
Coming up with a decent counter argument should be easy then.

| Quote ="Mrs Barista"I don't think there will. Tony wanted to play full back when both he and Briscoe were at the club, and as a result Briscoe was played out of position had some relatively unsuccessful games at wing and centre, because he is an out and out full back. My suspicion is that, had Tony not been at the club, we'd have probably offered Briscoe a bit more cash and he'd still be here. That's why there is this "head to head" thing, as effectively the club backed Tony for FB (and I don't think Sharp really rated Briscoe either).'"
Tony went to FB when Briscoe was out injured. Nothing to do with him 'wanting' the position or Briscoe being moved aside to make way. He kept Briscoe out because his form there was very good - something conveniently forgotten nowadays.
If reports are true, paying Briscoe 'a bit more money' would have broken the pay structure in place at the time.

Tony didnt have the right to pick and choose were he played, It was so simple, Briscoe was our first choice fullback, Motu came in when he was injured and played better for the back end of the 06 season in our grand final run in so when Briscoe came back he was second choice fullback and had to play in the centres and eventually cover the wing when Tingha left the club, then the next season we had Tony contracted and Briscoe off contract, we offered Briscoe a deal but he wanted a deal that was more then he was worth (at the time) and was offered this at Rovers, he left and become a much better player and fair play to him.
In hindsight it was a bad decision, but to say that Briscoe was released becuase Motu wanted to play fullback is stupid, he earned it at the time.

| Very sad news if that's the end of his career at Hull. I know he's been injury blighted for a while, but it's not a nice way to end your career.
Best of luck Motu.

| i think his chances of a new contract are very slim.i still believe that we will bring in someone else,as i can't see us just going with jordan tansey at fb with horney covering if needed.tansey as i have said before is a replacement for byrne,a utility back, and therefore can see a new signing coming in at full back.

Probably worthy of its own thread but we seem to have had a lot of people retiring permanently from the game (or semi-permanently like Scott Logan) over recent years. We probably need a witch doctor to come and purge the KC of its bad karma. Anyone know one?

| Sounds pretty horrible. Hope he makes a good recovery.
Great player but we need to move on. I will remember him for 3 pieces of magic
1) Try at Cardiff (Obviously)
2) Try against Bradford in the GF eliminator 2006
3) Stanley Gene getting knocked out when trying to tackle him in the 1st SL derby at caravan park.
He also suffered a horrific facial injury when playing for NZ didn't he? Probably the smallest player in the squad but hard as they come.
I'm sure he'll pick up a contract somewhere. Good luck Motu and I hope the club give the fans a chance to say goodbye

| It will be sad to see him go, he has done very well for us and I will always remember that try at Cardiff and the night he ripped Leeds apart at Headingley.
No room for senitment though, even if he recovers I would not be offering him a new deal.

| Very bad luck for Motu, and I think that probably signals the end of his career at Hull. I will be sad to see him leave as I think he's been a great servant for us and produced some moments of magic that will live in the memory long after he's gone.
Hope the fans get a chance to say goodbye to him.

Are you insane? Nobody we already had on the books was good/ready enough to step into Swain's shoes at that point. We coped ok-ish, but were notably weaker in his injury absence. We needed a hooker and got the best one on the market. IMO there can be absolutely no complaints about the recruitment of Berrigan. How we've utilised him and the platform he's been given to perform since are a different matter.

What is it about our backs? Games missed due to injury (out of 18 possible):

Tony 13
Raynor 13
Briscoe 10
Whiting 8'"
It's harder work for them carrying the pack.

| Shame if tony was to finish his career like this, he was a very good player for us in 2005/06 and will always be rembered for his try in the CC final.
Hopfully he can recover from this latest set back and get a contract with another team for next season.
