Although I haven't seen many of the unusual instances upon which some of the questions are based, here is one I thought I knew:
=#BF0000Stealing ball 9. Where a player steals the ball from a player on whom he is effecting a tackle, play will be allowed to continue. Where two or more players are effecting the same tackle - irrespective of whether all but one “drops off” the tackle, and the ball is subsequently taken from the tackled player, a penalty will be awarded against the player or players effecting the tackle.
So it still counts as a steal if all the other tacklers have dropped off and the one left steals the ball. Pretty obvious why this is the case but I didn't know it. It is a very educational quiz. Thanks cod'ead.

| 73% - It was the corner flag that kept getting me. I shall be asking for them to be removed in future.
Question 92 - rule differs from RFL - you'll know it when you see it.
What it shows is that the "very simple rules" have some not so simple nuances. My advice is, if you have the time, try the quiz.

The thing is I don't get paid to do that job, it's not my chosen profession. My work does get monitored and reviewed and if I got that many complaints about my decisions there would be serious questions asked. The man in the middle gets paid to do his job and so do his touch judges, all I want really is consistency.

I was wondering who would be the first.
I'm not asking you to referee a game, just interested in how much you think you may know about the rules. Similar to I wouldn't expect you to be a concert pianist to appreciate good classical music.

| Wonder no longer.
I would appreciate a concert pianist if he hit the right notes in the right order (a la Andre Previn and Morecombe and Wise), and not "the right notes, not necessarily in the right order".

Doesn't help if you have no idea what the notes are to start with though

Point taken. It does beg the question though, that if all referees carry the same amount of knowledge in their heads (having passed the necessary exams and learned the laws), why do we have such diverse interpretions. This, I believe, is the fans' main complaint. If every official dealt with incidents in exactly the same way, we would all understand. Regrettably this doesn't happen, hence the disquiet.

Probably because no two incidents are entirely identical and as I said in an earlier post: the ref has one angle of view and a split second to make that decision. There is not another single person in the stadium that has the same angle of view as the ref and he certainly doesn't have the benefit of replay and slo-mo.

I don't think it's usually the more obscure (for want of a better word) laws that people are worried about, though. It's offsides, ball stripping, forward passes and suchlike that tend to end up being talking points.

| 44/50 so far. Handovers done me a few times, always thought that fumbles etc on the last meant a handover rather than a scrum.

Again that usually comes back to positioning and the fact that no one man can be in a single position to see everything. That then leads us on to the desired involvement of the TJs.

I agree. It's not knowledge of the rules that's in question, it's why they don't seem to be applied in the same way consistently.

| Never knew you had to restart play with a scrum for a burst ball, even if it's not been spilt. Strange rule.

| Another one:
Blue puts a high cross-field kick into the Red in-goal. An on side Blue player leaps for the ball and after gaining possession is tackled by his opposite number whilst still in the air. This causes the Blue player to lose the ball over Red's dead ball line. Your decision is:-
How is this a 20m restart for Red and not a penalty for a tackle in the air?

You can tackle in the air in-goal if you're the defending team. Pretty sure the ref could give a penalty for getting them in a dangerous position, but if you secure them and they knock on its tough!
