| Just a quick question to see if any of you would have Kear back in a heart beat instead of Agar.

Got us up for the Cup games but our league form was poor and the least said about his Brough/Faumuina cock up the better.

| I'm happy with Agar in charge and would be upset if he were sacked. However, Kears appointment would soften the blow.

| As Head Coach or Team Manager? - an unequivocal [size=200NO![/size
As an assistant to a proper coach? - In a heartbeat [size=200YES[/size
John Kear's single biggest failing is not accepting what his role in this game is.
He understands the game better than most people I have ever been in contact with. His attention to detail is second to none, when it comes to identifying a player's strengths & weaknesses. When Bomber brought him here, the first thing he did was hand each our our 1st team squad a dossier detailing which foot they usually stepped from (in a given situation) and other details that even our coaching staff and the players themselves were not aware of.
He is, without doubt, one of the best technical coaches in the game.
What he is not, is a manager, in as much as he cannot manage a full team of players.
When Kear does retire from the game, I have no doubt he will write a book. I will be in the front of the queue to buy that book because it will become a best-seller and should be a bible for any potential future coaches.

I first encountered John Kear when I was reffing Alliance and he'd just got the gig as 'A' team coach at Cas. It was a Friday night at Headingley, Leeds were on top of everything and Cas were buggering around as usual.
John came into my dressing room to clarify a couple of points:
The first was that he'd noticed the Leeds full back usually trapped the ball with his foot before picking it up and he wanted me to clarify the offside rule on a "downtown" call. I did and Cas hammered Leeds all night for it.
The second was a little more complicated. Now bear in mind that at this time a square marker could strike for the ball (the tackled player had to place or drop the ball in front of his foremost foot and play it, in any direction, with his feet), it was what was known as a loose ruck. Kear asked me what decision I would give if: on the 5th tackle, a Cas player placed the ball on the floor, played it forward and the Leeds acting-half picked it up. My reply was, "penalty to Cas, Leeds player handling in the ruck".
That's all he wanted to hear. He'd studied the Laws of the Game and looked for what they didn't say, rather than what they did.
Unfortunately, we don't have too many people, involved in the game, who are capable of such lateral thought.
I once told Bomber that Kear was his best ever signing.
I think John just got too ambitious

I see what you did there Sad that he has brought more smiles to the Rovers supporters than he ever has for us.
I like Kear, but not the coach for us again. Cod'Ead put it perfectly in the post's above.
Nice insight that as well Cod'ead.

| It wouldn't be the progress I was hoping for and it's never going to happen anyway but:
John Kear: 2 x Challenge Cup winner
Rich Agar: .
'nuff said.

| If it had to be one of the two you would have to choose Kear over Agar, but the board wouldn't have him back anyways.

As a no.2 I would have him back in a heartbeat but he's bigger than that now and he would not go backwards.

I've seen many cases of people being promoted beyond their capabilities, rarely do they develop further to fulfil the demands of the role.
Kear has shown on numerous occasions that Head Coach really is one step too far. Possessing an undoubted ability to get a side to raise their game for one-off matches is not enough. I'd like to think he would realise that but I reckon his ego will get in the way now. I also believe that any head coach he served under would spend more time watching his back too.
ATEOTD it was the Board who promoted him as Bomber's successor, just as it has been the board who have appointed all the subsequent coaches. This proves that they either went for the cheapest available option or that they really are very poor pickers of men.
