| Regarding that picture on the previous thread, that was an awful tackle by Chase and he deserved more punishment than he got.
Still a better defender than Dobson.

| Someone I work with is mates with Rob Crossland, apparently the current plan is to sell Dobson to Hudds.

Thought Dobbo was on a fortune. Can't see Hudds paying out a bigger salary for Dobbo for someone whose possibly not as good. Can't see it but stranger things have happend.

Totally disagree Chase is one of the worst if not the worst in SL imo, he made 102 tackles so far in the full season! and 25% of those he has missed, the only tackles I recall from Chase are high cheap shots. Now don't get me wrong Dobson is also a poor tackler however at least he makes more and misses less.

| who gives crap wether he can defend. some of the best half backs have been shocking defenders... long being a classic example.... lets be fair, dobson, chase, and afew others wont be topping the tackle completed tables, but they'll all be there at the top of the assist table, and thats waht we need, a creator not a tacking machine, we had one of them in dave webber, but he was turd with ball in hand... cant have it all im afraid...and anyways, if dobson and chase could tackle, theyd both be in the nrl probably

Biggest myth going that, Long was a fine defender for a h/back and we even witnessed that during his very short time with us, as is Danny Brough.

I'd rather have Chase defending than Dobson, time after time you see Dobson at fault for tries. It's not just about the stats and missed tackles, positioning also comes into play.
Anyway I judge a half on what they create.

Agreed, I couldn't give a toss about the defensive stats of a halfback, that can be sorted by the structure of those around him.
Edit: Just seen the try assist stats, Dobbo's played 9 more games, yet created only 3 more. They're the stats I'm most interested in.

I don't disagree and I think they both offer a lot in that department and I would not be disappointed with either, however if I personally had the choice of either I would choose Dobson, for me he offers a more rounded game with his kicking ability, his try assists are actually above Chase at them minute but nothing in so both offer what we need in that dept.

Nor do I to a certain degree, however I was responding to a poster who claimed Dobbo is a one trick pony & the worst defender in SL, and the bare facts are he is not either of those things.

Fair point but just checked over the last couple of seasons and nothing much in their try assist totals, my point being both produce the goods in that dept.

| Dobsons got a much better kicking game but can go missing and doesn't have that running game and X factor Chase has. He plays in more games than Chase but I would say from what I have seen Chase is the better defender.
Both are the same age (26).
All irrelevant anyway, Dobsons not coming here.

Dobson will work better in a structured attack. I'd prefer Chase, but we'd need someone with a good kicking game alongside him.

| A decent coach would place Dobson in the defensive line surrounded by players who can make up for his shortcomings.
That's the problem.

Well tbf we will have to do that with Chase as well if we get him, and to be honest I am confident we will be fine with it as Gentle is big on defense so it should work well in our team, interestingly I have noticed that Gentle is also keen for the lads to throw the ball about in the opposition 25 more than we have done all season, Gentle has set the scene for some exciting rugby at the club imo.

I reckon we will get the kicking game from Holdsworth, mind I have noticed Heriamia has a fairly decent boot on him as well.

A bit of support for the fact that you have signed Holdsworth tucked away in this Manchester Evening News article, you may all have seen it and it is by no means definitive, just seems to reflect that Salford are resigned to it!

"Hull FC continue to be linked with Redsā Aussie play-maker Daniel Holdsworth, who is under contract for the 2013 campaign. Reds expect Holdsworth to honour the terms of his existing deal and any move to Hull for the former Bulldogs player before then would have to involve a transfer fee."

| I didn't say Dobson was the worst defender in SL, just a terrible one. He often goes missing and as evidenced on Friday night, is prepared to shout at people for missing tackles.
No thank you. Would rather keep Goldie, he's an awful kicker but defensively sound and knows how to open a defence.
Our problem is that when we get into an opponents 20, we are feckin' clueless. We need someone with a touch of magic to do that.
Oh, and in defence of Longy, he was only ever a great scrum half when paired with Tommy Martyn.

Its a shame the other thread was locked "Dobbo never did this to anyone"
Who was that? the innocent guy from Normanton who Ben Cockaine did over?

I'd agree with that, Dobson actually makes the majority of tackles he's in place for, where he looks bad is the shed loads of times you see him reaching out grabbing for a collar or usually thin air, because he's left himself too much ground to make up.
