If as a club we do not have a total abstention policy, and we sign a player who we know smokes, then what the hell has it to do with anyone if he continues to smoke?

Depends what they're smoking. If it's recreational drugs, I can understand it. If it's just cigarettes, that do nothing other than make you smell bad, breathe worse and die younger - then the same as anyone else, they're moronic!

Not bothered as long as they do the business on the pitch.

If your a professional sports person and a smoker than you either a) have no will power b) have no ambition or c) your a bit of an idiot. Or possibly even all 3.

about covers it for me, we've seen many a player that coud have done so much more if only they'd had a bit more of a and b, and in a lot of cases, a shed load less of c!

Well, let's not get carried away. Drinking and being tw@s in nightclubs is certainly not exclusive to Hull FC or even RL. My own football team (Aston Villa) proved that only last week.
A player that chooses to smoke is not looking after his own health responsibly, which I'd hope is the minimum the club expect.

Being an non smoker I don't agree with it .But it didn't do M Crane any harm he was a great player

Players from all clubs in almost all sports go to nightclubs and make an idiot of themselves, so that isn't too much of a problem as long as they're not doing anything (too) illegal.

I think with smoking it depends how many and how often they smoke, smoking a few fags a day won't make a huge difference (although it will clearly have an impact), but smoking say 20 a day will clearly make a difference to performance.

Is there an actual point to this thread or we just having a discussion for discussions sake?

I thought so as well, he has done a lot of good publicity about it in the past to raise awareness.

He is a fantastic example of how things can be turned around.

I would disagree. I used to smoke, though never heavily. I certainly didn't get up to anything like 20 in a day unless I was on a particularly heavy night out. When I gave up, I noticed a huge difference to my athletic performance. Any professional sportsman who smokes is knowingly indulging in a habit that is having an adverse affect on his performance. It doesn't matter how good they are, they could be better if they stopped smoking.

I don't agree with it but it's a personal decision. If the player can still do what the club ask of him then there is really no issue. If he can't due to a lack fo fitness due to smoking then it becomes an issue. I'd presume that o'meley is fit enough to play in the club's eyes. The fact that he could be better if he smoked is irrelevant

as I have said, maybe this is why we're not retaining him, Gentle seems to be a lot less tolerant (and I am greatful for it)
