Other than being sent to prison, I can't think of any sportsmen who have been sacked for off field shenanigins. Do you know of any?

In a round about way, we did terminate Raynor's contract on the basis that he was unlikely to be around the following season - a decision that turned out to be pretty spot on.

I never said that, but I am thinking about a couple of players who went down for assault and imo should have been sacked as it gives out the wrong message.

There are a lot of juniors or fringe players who have been sacked, but I must admit I'm struggling with 1st team players in any sport.

Suppose it can all depend on charge and time they'll be away. If they're sacked by their current employers and then signed up by another club upon release it's surely no different to the current club keeping their employment ongoing.

I think it is about the message which is sends out, professional sports people are public figures often adored by impressionable youngsters.

I personally think they should be sacked by a club, but on release if a club wants to rehabilitate them then that is fine dependent on the offence of course, I was disgusted when our club never sacked Raynor for his racist attack.

I'm guessing those caught by drugs testing would count here and there are probably lots, especially if you include athletics - presumably being banned for four years counts as a "sacking" in athletics.

I agree, anything like that and the club should sack them instantly, however, I don't believe the club should sack anyone who's in trouble regardless of their offence. Marlon King's a good example, jailed for sexual assault and I think it was Wigan at the time who he was playing for sacked him yet on release Coventry signed him up - that I agree with, Wigan took the right course of action and once released Coventry had every right to sign him up. However, a few years back Duncan Ferguson was jailed for three months because of a headbutt on while playing, ridiculous when this type of thing goes on quite often in sport and on the pitch but Everton stuck by him - it wasn't while he was playing for us the charge related to an incident in Scotland but the club stood by him, honoured his contract and upon release he continued to play for us so I think it really depends on the offence, each one should be taken on its merits.
