Whilst it was right we were singing his praises I did think it was a bit off to be chanting "Theres only one Sean Long" when the players came over to the fans at the end of the match. It was a superb team performance and they all deserved the praise at the end of the game. Just a thought.

It was Longys day and i think the rest of the players were well aware of the occasion.

I disagree. Yes it was special for Long but the whole team put in a massive effort and deserved the praise just as much. By all means chant his name during the game etc but when the players come over for a bit of well earned praise at the end of a tough match I dont really agree with singing about just one player. Just my opinion of course.

Similar to when the players did a 'lap of honour' at the end of the match against bradford last season and everyone directed chants at Motu Tony?

Well no not really as that was our chance to say goodbye to Motu.

All the players were applauded, it just happened that they came along as that song was being sung.

No we started to sing it as they and specifically Longy arrived, it wasn't just a coincidence. Look its not a big deal really I was just giving my opinion that specific songs for specific players are more suited to "in-game" situations (like the "One Tom Briscoe" song after he scored his try) rather than when the praise should be for the whole team at the end of the game. TBF I cant really recall it happening with any other players in similar circumstances before?

I said to Mr B after the game basically what you said in our OP about it maybe devaluing the contribution of the others. However, a couple of members of the squad had said last week that they knew how much this game meant to Long and didn't want to let him down. Plus certain players attract individual songs/chants than others. Yeamo can ghost through games, put in a massive hit and get the "Yeamo" chant, much like Chico Jackson used to. Richard Swain was a legend for FC but never got a chant at all IIRC. Long is a big personality, the link FC have been missing for 3 years and was returning to the place he'd won countless trophies after 13 years there. We'd got a new chant during the game and it captured the mood of the moment.

And with respect, I disagree with the OP. I don't think it was off at all, the fans were excited by the performance, all the players knew a return to Saints was a massive thing for Long and I doubt they went home thinking anything at all negative for the fans, or that there performance wasn't appreciated.

Watching it back on Sunday morning, it looked like one or two of our players stood back and allowed Shaun to take the well earned applause, I think players and fans alike understood the pressure shaun was under and was just recognising it.

I'm sure some of the players who have played the last couple of years are over the moon that we finally have a scrum half on the books. They probably felt like joining in the singing.

I Think that there is an interesting issue here because the fact about the chanting did make think a bit about the rest of the players really!! (although the Longy Wonderland bit at the end where he conducted the crowd with the bottle of Champaigne was for me at least a memeory that will stay with me a long time) However reading the Southern Newspapers of late and the amount of exposure that Longy has got where there is usually no rugby league leads me to believe that we have at last fuond that rare commodity a personality. In modern sport and RL in particular they are few and far between and it looks to me that the club have signed a massive asset for them both on and off the field.It has to be managed but could turn out to be a master stroke. The adulation of the fans is all part and parcel of that hype which could be iorth hundreds of thousands to the club!! I thought myself that the Messiah Tee shirts was a risk, but it has worked after Saturday and the risk was worth while! He could prove to be the biggest 'Personality' we have had since Sterlo and Knocker!

Interesting times though and just my thoughts!

I have always been a fan of Long,and was overjoyed when he signed for Hull. He may be "past his best",but his commitment is still there,and I am sure he is the catalyst we have needed to kickstart our progress forward.

We have cried out for a world class scrum half for years (i still think hes one of the best 7's about), some of have dreamed of having a proper (national) household name at the club.

In Long we could have both for 2 years.

Enjoy it while he's here, milk it for what its worth, he will and so will the club.

Sit back and enjoy the ride, its going to be a belter! (especially when he goes crackers a couple of times a year on and off the pitch as he said in the sky interview!)

I understand Robbo's point but I think that the Saints game was a one off, Longy going back there after 12 years with the club and playing against his best mates and getting motm.
