DDD stayed as coach for the rest of that season (75-76), the WHOLE of the next season (76-77) when we won Div 2, and got sacked at Christmas during the 77-78 not long after we signed Vince Farrar.
So his demise wasn't quite as quick as you suggest !
Thanks for a great read Wilf. How nice it must be for you to write your piece on the back of an epic win. The boys ran their blood to water in France and got their just reward. Like you I want to say a big thankyou to all the people who made the long trip to support our team, I'm sure their encouragement meant a great deal to the players. I'm sure we'll outnumber and outsing the Wanky fans at Huddersfield, we just need the boys to do the business.
I was lucky enough to take the gamble and go to the match. Despite a very poor spectacle, after the game I felt i'd witnessed something of a land mark occasion in this clubs great history. There were several old hands like myself actually filling up !! not only because of the emotion of a pressure win and what that means for our season (well for at least another 2 weeks) but also for the way players and supporters celebrated as one. The genuine out pouring of emotion from players and supporters alike is something I've not seen in the current SL era. Until last Saturday i thought the player/supporter bond which we took for granted in the 70s and 80s would never return.
The conditions where appalling and the effort was just incredible but just maybe if nothing else comes of this win we may have more importantly witnessed the birth of that culture change ........................ Here's dreaming !!
