| For the information of all fans of Hull FC.
When the news broke that the deal between Hull City Council and Hull FC for the location of a joint NHS/Hull FC venture at the Boulevard had fallen through the Chairman of FC Voices met with the Leader of the City Council. He made it perfectly clear to the Authority that the fans were disappointed that the project, (which it appeared the Council had suggested in the first place), had been rejected in favor of an Academy, and that many felt let down by the Council. He then went on to discuss the possibility of fans being able to visit the Boulevard for one last look before it was demolished, and how best the Stadium could be remembered by future generations.
This action was prompted by the fact that so many Stadiums like the Watersheddings in Oldham, Parkside in Hunslet, The Athletics Ground at Rochdale, Clarence Street at York and even the old Craven Park have disappeared into the mists of time with nothing to remind future generations of the importance of these places to the local community.
Sadly the chance for fans to visit the Stadium again was not possible because of Health and Safety issues, but the Council agreed that a memoriam or ‘Garden of Remembrance’ type project would be included in the new development.
This would act as a lasting memorial to the famous Stadium and as a focal point for those whose family and friends had their ashes scattered on the pitch. It was also agreed that the posts would be refurbished and relocated to the West Hull ground, and that the Threepenny Stand sign would be relocated to the Street life Museum. This appeared at the time the best that the Group could get for the fans out of a sad situation. FC Voices will continue to monitor the Councils progress toward these ends.
In a statement to the Press the Chairman of FC Voices said, ‘Since the announcement by the Council that the Boulevard is to be demolished as part of the development of the site for the fourth Academy, FC Voices, the communications arm of the fans of Hull FC, have been working with them on behalf of those fans to ensure that there is a lasting Memoriam to the Stadium, and to those supporters whose ashes have been scattered there.
“It will be a sad day for every fan of our club when the bulldozers move in, for they will be removing what had been, since 1895, the home of the 'Airlie Birds' and the spiritual home of hundreds of thousands of Hull FC supporters. Progress is inevitable, but it is important that in the future the heritage, location and origins of the famous club, are remembered. The creation of a fitting Memoriam as part of the new development will put down a marker for future generations, and in the coming months FC Voices will continue to work closely with the Council to ensure this objective is realised.”
