| Jowitt, Johnstone and Fifita looked like they wanted to win the game. Expected a bit more from Lyne.
Miller just killed virtually every move he got involved in including a few where Les Tonks could have gone through the gap but he turned back and threw out another hospital pass.
Arona's performance was not one of his best.
Typical and predictably poor show that gave the large Wakey following a depressing 80 minutes.

Would certainly not be short of enthusiasm and would run into a brick wall repeatedly for wakey of asked I suspect. We have a number of capable props though.
Plenty of time to fix things up for round one.

| We lost by 4pts after gifting them 3 tries and a sin bin in the 1st half which they scored from.
Not the end of the world, but need to improve......

| Not a good day at the office and I was really underwhelmed watching it. Our attack seemed non existent and apart from one crafted try we relied on broken play.
I thought Kopczak was good for Fev today and agree with another users post (Adam) that we never saw him play like that for Trin. I think we have become over reliant on our Props as ball handlers. Sometimes it’s so predictable that they are going to pass and the ball speed is generally slow. Arona used to be great in this area but his reaction time seems to have dipped a little. Koppy was good today because he ran hard and direct. We don’t have a big Prop who simply runs hard and straight. Fifita is our go to man but he needs help. I still think there is room for the old fashioned Prop in today’s game and I think we miss the likes of England. Huby left the biggest void as he could run hard but could also pop an offload and generate some second phase rugby.
It’s only my opinion but I’d like us to start using our halfbacks in conjunction together in attacking plays rather than having our halves split. I remember Finn/Williams would often get in the middle (just off the ruck) to start a move and have Miller/Grix running off the back of them and the ball was moved a lot quicker. I think Walker passes as well as Miller/Lino so when all 3 are fit I’d play them all.
Today was disappointing, I expected Fev to be up for it but I was shocked at how many tackles they were riding and bouncing out of. There was a lot of arm grabbing too.
I’m hoping we start playing a bit more direct and use our Props as Props a bit more.

Do we?
we have a couple of out and out props and a few who will play there to the best of their ability,
Just my opinion. of course, but I think we need another powerhouse prop not a willing horse.

| Very poor performance but anyone would think we lost 50-0 looking at some social media postings.
We lost by 4, had 2 tries disallowed and 2 sin binning's.
Don't get me wrong we didn't deserve to win, Fev out enthused us all over the field but it wasn't a
disaster. We really missed Lino and should look sharper when he is back.
It was a friendly, as has already been said no one will care at this point next week.

Exactly no points lost, so long as there are lessons learned if needed to be then better to sort things out early.

I agree - the first thoughts were that we were abysmal, which we were, but yet we could still have won it had we taken our chances.
Lineham's acrobatics deserved a try!
I also agree with some that Koppy never played like that for us and I stand by my earlier comments that we're at least one such prop short. Fifita shouldn't be the sole battering ram. I know we have some that CAN play prop, but none of them would have played like Koppy played yesterday.

You're right there.
The worst time to be a Trinity fan is when you go to a game expecting to win, we usually get beat, yesterday being a classic example.
Far better knowing that it will be a tough game and then coming back with a win.
Nobody is going to be over confident about beating Hull, so we might just sneak a win

| DISCIPLINE
It’s probably the thing that cost us the game yesterday as we basically played 20mins with 12 men..
First sin bin.
There’s nothing wrong in chasing down the kicker but it needs to be the ball not the man. Liam Hood might end up in front of the RFL discipline panel as they seem to be cracking down on player protection..
sin bin 2
Dave Fifita was our best forward yesterday, until the sin bin.. it’s unusual for Fifita to retaliate and I suspect he got provoked… nevertheless he needs to be better than that..as Fev got the exact result they wanted …a yellow card!
Footnote
Get used to seeing plenty of yellow cards and a trip to the RFL this season if our and any other teams discipline isn’t where it needs to be..I reckon they are going to be all over anything that looks high , and late along with punches..especially with the RFL concerns about concussion…

| The problem from my point of view would be we will probably be having the same sort of conversation at least 4/5times during the season.
Trinity never seem capable of learning lessons.
Yes it's been that way for years so come on Trinity make some commitment to rectify the problem

They will be all over it but there wasn’t a punch from Fifita luckily. Thought it was harsh at the time and even watching it back on replay it’s handbags at worse. I’m not sure what he got sent to bin for. Not sure why he got sent as he didn’t seem to make contact or very little. You see players grappling with each other getting a telling off and no card. I agree with you that he needs to be better though. Better to dust himself off and go hunting with a hard legal challenge when the opportunity arises.

Just watched the game over breakfast this fine Australia Day .... and replayed the two incidents a few times.... Hood came into a player after he had released the ball... but barely touched him, then the Rovers man went down like German soccer player.
Fifita reacted to something in the tackle and gestured to the player he felt responsible before he was restrained... there was no punch, intent to punch or contact made.
Overall the refereeing was sub standard ...
ps the pass from Jowitt to Lineham was backwards

I was stood directly in line with that pass and it was about a yard forward.
Didn’t see the Hood incident, Fafita despite being so far away as I was at the time like you say looked to be gesturing at a Fev player with Seni Lafao simply holding him calming the situation. Nothing in it at all.

Just looked at the incidents on trinity tv and looks like I got the first bit wrong .. Fev player released the ball l( not a kick)and Hood pushed him in the back but there doesn’t look to be much in it..
But players will need to be careful this season because it looks like the cards are going to be out!

Yep, you can't push a player at all now after the ball has gone, literally any contact is going to see you binned, it's to do with the growing evidence from scientific research of the potential damage caused by flexing of the neck. Every coach will have spelled that out firmly to his players.
I agree re the Fifita incident, it's hard to see what the sin binning was for other than marching purposefully towards the Fev player.

had another good look on video and i still convinced the ball was flat... but that's the danger of the human brain,,, eye witness testimony is not reliable...

This is a double edged sword and reminds me of our promotion team. It is more than capable of gaining promotion. It’s full of players past their peak but still more than capable especially at Championship level. However once in SL that team would have to be completely rebuilt and that’s not easy even for a rich club.
It’s worth noting that for the last 20 minutes Fev were wllting and we were visibly stronger and fitter, had we shown an ounce of composure we could and should have won. Fev hung on because our ineptitude in attack kept giving them renewed vigour but that was a friendly, to replicate that ten or more times to stay in SL is a massive ask.
I don’t blame Fev and they have to get into SL to at least give it a go but it’s a fine line. As Phantom has stated, every time they get a young prospect they lose him and that’s the curse of a promotion seeking team. We were hugely lucky in our early SL years as we did manage to save a few kids and have some depth but it was tight.
Hope Fev do come up but the team that emerges will need to be very different from the one they have now in my opinion.

I agree re rebuilding the team, they have a few players who could do a job in SL but they would need 20+ new players which is difficult to achieve when you are picking up the scraps from what is left once the established SL teams have had their pick.
I think the last 20 was more to do with our bench than Fev wilting though. I haven't rewatched the game but on the day it felt like we put on players who were at the younger end of our senior squad and who hadnt had game time prior to that such as Aydin and Batch and others who had, had a good rest whereas Fev had to reintroduce the likes of Moores and Seni Laffao. I also think the younger lads brought a level of enthusiasm that the more established fist team players failed to show for the first 60 minutes.

Well, we all see it differently but from where I was stood Fev were on the rack or at least should have been in the last 20, they looked tired to me. We looked energised but lacking in ideas, mainly because Miller thought he would be a playmaker, he is a great little player but I think most agree that he can't run a game, he needs to step back from that one. Gaskell has taken some stick but Miller didn't help him, they certainly didn't seem to be singing off the same hymn sheet, It's a shame because we know exactly what Miller is capable of whereas we don't know Gaskell's true potential. It needed to be the Gaskell show and it wasn't.

No I agree they were flagging but they were having to rotate players back on who had already played big minutes like you would do in a normal game.
We were bringing on lads off the bench on 60 minutes who hadn't had any game time (at least I don't they had) due to the size of our named squad.
I think Gaskill showed some really classy touches and looked more direct than Milky but he just wasn't in the game enough for me.

Leigh looked gassed at one point mid second half and we were starting to get a foothold. Then the extremely harsh Fifita incident happened in possession and that seemed to breathe some life back into Fev. That was the turning point for me.
