| Heartbreaking watching him dazzle on the field at such an early age and make it all the way to the top in a sport that was all about bigger is better .An inspirational guy ,and one I loved to watch play as long as it wasn’t against us.How cruel to be struck down in his prime with such a young family to care for ,very humbling and thought provoking and I truly wish the lad and his family all the best ,a real choker of a program for me

| It’s so sad seeing rob deteriorate so quickly
He’s being such a great servant to rl, he doesn’t deserve it
No one does

| Some lovely heartfelt comments on here from you Trin fans regarding Rob's cruel disease
We all have our rivalries on game day, Myself included
But IMO we have the best sporting family in the world and the way that the RL world has stood strong behind Rob is a testament to that

| Watching the 2015 Huddersfield v Leeds game on Sky, Rob was tearing up and down, at the heart of everything, 5 years on its unbelievable, so sad, life’s not fair at all.

| No problem with this thread.
Breaks my heart every time I see him on TV.
He could so easily have hid in a corner and felt sorry for himself. Great great man.
Sinfield gets a mention on this from me. I hope when I'm in need I have a friend like him to step up.

I couldn’t watch it all the way through. I tend not to get emotional about people who I only know through there fame, seems false to me but this did.
Was I sad when Diana died, shocked yes but not upset.
Occasionally though you come across someone who’s gifted and in Robs case modestly famous but who somehow manages to appear ordinary, just like us.
I wasn’t sad for RB the player, it was RB the man , he just seems so human in a way most famous people including sportsman often don’t.
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer man they say, how like the rest of us is that? Who can’t connect to a man or women like that. He represents the thousands of ordinary people who suffer everyday, he doesn’t think he’s special, just unlucky.
Really sad yet oddly uplifting.

Well said, vasty.
From what I've seen Rob is the product of a good upstanding loving family, and that seems to have rubbed off on himself. During his playing days to me, whilst I acknowledged his great skill, he was just another of those pesky Rhino brats that came through at roughly the same time ie Sinfield, JJB, Peacock, Mcguire et al. Didn't you just love to hate them? How mistaken can you be. A genuine hero. Keep battling on Rob owd lad.

And he's such a decent bloke.
It's absolutely gut wrenching to watch a young lad go from where he was just a couple of years ago, to where he is right now.
Superb family and a couple of youngsters.
You'd need a heart of stone not to be moved by the documentary and the lad needs some kind of miracle.
It's so utterly sad and grossly unfair.

| There has to be massive credit given to Leeds and some of their senior guys on how they have dealt with this too.
The support from the club and his ex team mates makes you proud to be involved in RL and Sinfield, has been top drawer with his own efforts
They are certainly doing all they can for both Burrow and the MND charity

| I've said it before but never had any time for Sinfield prior to this. All those Leeds fans dubbing him Sir Kevin Sinfield made my stomach turn but now I actually would like to see him recognized for his efforts.
Burrow has been inspirational in the way he has tackled this and Sinfield no less inspirational in the effort he put into helping out his mate and raising much needed funds for research into this debilitating illness.
I salute both of them.

It demonstrates to me how team spirit is so important and why that Leeds team was so good, they were as one.
By team spirit, I don't mean attending new years eve parties in defiance of the law, I mean team spirit and friendship on and off the pitch for life. See Fox and Brooke for another example.

Not good FIL - unfortunately I think the game had gone so far towards speed and power that injuries to the brain I would have thought were more likely.
You can build muscles to protect the torso but the head is totally unprotected.
I don’t profess to know the answer but if they ever run about equipped like American footballers then that would be the day I stopped watching!

I get your point 1315, but even all the protection that American Football players wear doesn't offer them a great deal of protection. If you've never seen it then the 2015 film "Concussion" starring Will Smith is a very worthwhile watch....

| I must say that the concussion, head knocks are always on my mind, no pun intended when you think of the average career of a RL player, not including the amateur years, possibly 10 to 15 years, the amount of collisions they must endure especially the forwards, frightening really.

It is and although they/you know the risks I can imagine it's a worry. Truth is it's an unfortunate part of the game but to remove the risk would fundamentally end the game. Like everyone else, I don't have an answer.

| The game has improved this area though.
Head assessments are a massive step forward from a player stumbling around and sending the physio off because he doesn't want to come off, Ronnie Gibbs style.
Also outlawing direct hits to the head and the shoulder charge are improvements that were needed because of the concussion issues that go with them.
We all like to see a big hit but it still needs to be safe.

I'm being pedantic here but it needs to be as safe as possible, I think we have to accept two 18 stone men running into each other at full pelt can never be truly safe.

100% with this, but as a dad it’s great to see Jordan put a shot on but head in hands time when he takes one. There’s also another thing and that is fractures around the head, ie cheek, jaw, eye sockets etc are hard to detect at the time and most players continue to play on after their HIA.

When my lad played under age RL I never even noticed the collisions, at that age, it wasn't much more than playground stuff. As he got older and used to play the occasional season in open age I became more and more uncomfortable. His mother simply refused to watch him in those games, it was too much for her. He doesn't play anymore and I have to say I don't miss it. Of course, had it been his living and as such he would have had some rewards for the risk he took, it would have been different but as you say no less nerve-racking.
Funny thing is he only ever picked up one modestly serious injury playing RL, I've lost count how many injuries he's had playing 5-a-side football and that includes a concussion or two.
It's a fine line.

| A lot on here will remember the Leeds half-back of 50 years ago, Mick Shoebottom, whom I worked with at Bison Concrete many years ago. a regular international, Shoey sustained a bad head injury in a controversial tackle with Colin Dixon , the big Salford forward. It put him out of the game and left him mentally scarred for life and an early death.

I agree. There are always going to be accidents and you can't wrap them in cotton wool but making head shots illegal as an example is just a sensible precaution that doesn't affect the game.
