| Wane's interviews after the Grand Final were simply embarrassing. He even managed to get his players to replicate his ramblings.
It just shows the ethos of arrogance that is engrained into Wigan RL.
It makes the 62-0 a lot sweeter knowing they won't accept it like the drubbing it was.

| Wane is a bit of a cock.
One of the things they went though happened on a day out. Bateman etc.
Actually, I am not sure another SL club would want him in charge.

| Quote ="bellycouldtackle"Respect is due to Wane, he has produced miracles this season. 7 or 8 first choice players out, most of them internationals, gets the very best out of young English players, his young mostly English home grown players have won the big prize. We should be begging to learn from the Wigan, they have the best scouts, the best junior coaches, the best sports science and fitness set up, they get their players fitter and stronger than anyone else. The best thing about Wane is that demands and gets extraordinary effort from his players week in week out, I love his style of play, his toughness, his love for his club. He should be the England coach, part time whist still running Wigan. How the hell is he not coach of the year, what he has achieved this year with his young team is I think the greatest coaching achievement in SL history. A remarkable man, a remarkable coach at a remarkable club.'"
If ever there was a case for using the franchise system correctly, Wigan would be a fine example of it.
Great post Belly....I like Wane. There. I've said it.
Would be boring if we all agreed wouldn't it?
His record speaks for itself.

| Don't you remember the "coach to wembley" comments ? And the zero recognition of Wakefield's performance?
All he was spoke about was this mystical virus and how many players were sidelined.
There were other disrespectful comments that I fail to remember.

| Shaun Wane is a great coach for Wigan.
His agenda is simple, its Wigan 1st, Wigan second and Wigan 3rd, he has zero interest in other clubs, teams or players (unless he is wanting to sign them).
Therefore all that he says in the media is designed ultimately to help him get the best from his team.
You do have to admire the fact that he steered them to a GF win and it was achieved with key personnel missing (Tomkins x 2 and McIllorum are huge boots to fill plus, O Loughlin, who has hardly played all season).
Although he does appear to rule by fear, you cannot take away the fact that he guided his team to the ultimate prize and if the measure of a good coach is to have players hitting their peak (by whatever means) he has done that very well.
As I said, if it's not Cherry & White, it's best not to listen to him but, there is no denying his success.

I took it with a pinch of salt. I'd rather concentrate on the great work our club did using it as a marketing tool in the club shop.
Let's be honest Mashy my friend, there isn't a SL coach who hasn't been disrespectful, unprofessional, arrogant about our great club when we beat them - isn't this the norm?
I think we need to get over it - look at Wigan.......they did.

| His success is undeniable - I just don't like him or his attitude to the game; Wigan play an ugly, lowest common denominator brand of thugby league that has infected SL to such an extent, that I can't see the RFL being able to wrest back control.

There's many SL coaches that give Wakefield credit for being the better team on the day.
Shaun Wane takes arrogance to a whole new level.
Anyway they won the GF, well done to them and to Wane, they wanted it more than Wire; ran harder, tackled harder.
I'm not a SL coach but you see it's not that hard to give a team some credit.

| He gave many teams credit last year, Saints, Warrington and Cas that I clearly remember. One of the many great things about Wane is that when you get praise of him you know you deserve it. Those young Wigan players will run through walls for him.

| So his first comments straight after the GF win were 100 % praise for Warrington as a club, then Smith who he praised as a top coach and then the Warrington players. I take it that you would not have him as coach of Trinity

It's easy to praise the opposition when you're the winner, come on Belly even your still just in the real world to know that. Didn't find it at all easy after being beaten
62 - 0 did he.
No I wouldn't have him as our Coach. i know you're in love with this 1970's shouty bullying fantasy world where injured players are jessies and even a broken leg can be cured by thr magic spunge because them old guys were that hard etc but that won't work with us.
The luxury Wigan have is that all their players are good and can choose to ignore Wane if needed because they know what they are doing or even move elsewhere if they wish. Most of our players are fragile and unwanted and actually need proper coaching, something I suspect is done by others at Wigan. Wane is Wigan's matchday mouthpiece but the players he has to work with were created long before he showed up by Coaches who do more than just shout or motivate as you'd call it.

Now I'm no fan of Wane, I don't buy into the Wigan have had a great season because they win the final etc we have been dire for most of the season but had the toughness to find ways to win games we really shouldn't.
The nature of the defete against Widnes just before the playoff was a catalyst for a fantastic play off series and saw a total change in our style which whilst based around defence suddenly became far more expansive. For me moving forward they need to maintain that style and success next year to change my opinion of him as a first team coach.
A couple of points I'd like to pick up on from this thread however to deffend him a little starting with your last Vasty re player development at Wigan and how others put the hard graft in and he gets them all prepared as first team players. Wane spent one of the longest apprenticeships maybe in recent history of a coach at Wigan nearly a decade in the Academy coaching ranks before he got a chance as assistant then coach. He developed many of the top players running around today that came through the Wigan system at Wigan and other clubs and is still heavily involved in the junior set up now.
Others have mentioned as an England coach, it doesn't stack up for me. He is too Wigancentric. I don't think he would be a success at any other club to be honest as the years he has put in, in the background have formed the current ethos of the Club and like it or not, and I'm on the fence about it, it is one that has proved successful.
The bloke is Wigan through and through, his players would clearly run through walls for him, some have cynically said on this thread "out of fear not respect" I'm personally not sure about that but regardless of what motivates them it has worked.
If players were so scared of him why would they be so keen to come back to Wigan? Tomkins X 2, Mossop, Burgess, Forsythe just resigned all had other options.
Whilst I am not crazy about his style of play he has gone all year without a recognised number 2, Deacon and Harris left, nobody was brought it which may explain the style Wigan adopted for much of the season. One thing that stands out to me however is his defensive structures are second to non. I'm not talking about the controversial old chestnut of the wrestle (which I've seen him also getting blamed for even though really Brown introduced that when he took over at the Giants, Wigan just learned how to do it better) but the structure of his line, the different speeds it moves in different parts of the field and how it slides and more importantly how every player knows exactly what to do at any given second I find brilliant. I don't think there is a better defensive structure anywhere in the game. Better defences because the NRL have vastly superior players but not a team that runs a better defensive pattern. That for me along with his player development is his strength.
Finally back to the point you make again about him just getting ready made first team players with no input, not only have the Academy kids proven to be a great asset to the club, players like Flower, Isa, Gelling, Sarginsson, Bateman, Clubb were all brought to the club as non established first team players from fairly average to poor teams, look at them now. He has just brought another 3 projects to the club in Forsyth after a year playing Union, Escare, and Navarette. Hardly superstars, but I am certain they will see their reputations improve significantly under Wane and after all isn't that the very detention of a coach? To continually improve individuals in their chosen field?

| So Jonh and Vasty agree that Wane is a fantastic defensive coach and that he would not be a good choice to coach the team with the worst defensive record in the league for the past two seasons. Absolute genius.

So the players and backup Wane has as opposed to Chester has nothing to do with it - genius. You really do have a very niave view on things, everything that glitters is not gold just because it's at any club other than ours most of it's just grey

| Ian Milward was arguably the top coach in the league on reputation when he joined Wigan and it turned out to be a disaster. Too much history between players and coach.
Wane is Wigan through and through he lives and breathes the place, sometimes to the detriment of the team, his handling of Rocky for example.
I just don't see how it would work for him at any other club. He created the culture over years at Wigan.
He admits his form fell off drastically as a player when he was sold to Leeds and he considered retiring, I just don't see how he would bring that passion and loyalty to any other club for his management methods to work.
Ps Vasty we agree again....you should bow down to my superior knowledge!

You know it don't work like that, nobody not even Mopsey matches their screen persona when you meet them - and we both know the real Belly is a lot more mainstream than his alter ego. We'll be fine..
