Very true, and that also applies to nearly every job in every day life. You apply for a job, say on Indeed, on the vast majority off applications, there is a pop up box, asking how many years of experience do you have

He might despite been raw do an amazing job. He could form a bond with the lads and progress the team with spirit and togetherness. Perhaps been a relatively inexperienced coach but having a recent playing career too, means he can relate the lads quicker and better.
Still feels like we're robbing Peter to pay the cheaper Paul and pocketing some of the money.

| If he believes in his ability as a coach to do it his way, make changes and get the team playing well then who can blame him for having ambition and throwing his hat into the ring. He will need someone at the side of him to offer some guidance because after all the clubs only ambition every season is to avoid relegation and I fear if he doesn't hit the ground running he could be swallowed up by the pressure of the situation. Whoever is chosen needs some tools to work with so let's hope the club give him them.

| Quote ="Spookisback"i find the 'too soon" thing a bit odd with Applegarth... as I understand it he is 37 years old the same age David Topliss was when he too over Trinity as head (player) coach and Andy Kelly when he became head coach. Peter fox was 38 and Ken Traill was 32.
in 2022... 37 is not young for a manager... in 1992 I was 32 when I got my first senior management role and things have even changed since then! He certainly seems to have worked an apprenticeship and is well respected.
I'm not saying he's the right man for the job (that's for others to decide) but lets debunk the age thing if he's good enough then he's good enough'"
As far as D T coaching Wakefield ,he was a legend at Wakefield and played at the highest level .With the team K T had he had cash to burn and I think with the players in that team a Wallace Arnold coach could have trained them .Andy Kelly was a crowd favourite when he played for Wakefield and was coaching when we were in Championship .P F was had all ready proved what a good Coach he was .If the Applegarth rummer is true ,it is a gamble that the club can not afford to take .I know 5 people who have bought season tickets for as long as me and are on about not getting one .

| Won't stop me buying a ST, I'll go along and support whoever takes up the reins.
I have read all this and another thread on this subject and it's apparent that nobody 'knows' anything about what the coaching set up was like so I'll trust that the club management have made the right decision not to re-instate WP .
I'll also have to trust they make the right call re the coach .
I'm just surprised they are prepared to take another gamble. I honestly thought they had another 'proven' SL coach lined up! We'll see.

When I saw the op I assumed mark had got the job
I can see now he’s applied not already got the job
All the things I hear is that Marks being doing a great job
The fact he’s applied is a really good thing, purely just to apply means he has self belief confidence he can do itand ambition among many other things
I don’t believe it possible for him to be ready for this at the mo Though
Agree with what u are saying re process

I heard it was an incorrect article from YP and all it really is, is that he's applied. .....which is great. But I haven't seen anything concrete to say that is the case. Have you?
Or is it just wishful thinking?

| Thinking about this a bit. Maybe Mark is the key to keeping some of the young talent as they have worked closely with him and he has developed them. He maybe key to Murphy staying or leaving, for example.

| Really looking forward to this appointment. Well done Mark A you have created a great pathway to the first team built up teams that believe in themselves.
Earlier this season I hear you were instrumental with your dealings with the players in your capacity as an assistant coach helping to turn the season around after what could only be described as a disastrous run of results. Good luck and lets see you spot the talent now for the campaign ahead and develop a a focussed team of players who refuse to give up.

| I consider this a line in the sand.
Redevelopment of ground started.
Virtually a blank piece of paper re the squad.
And what seems an educated, bright and knowledgeable young coach.
Let's hope it all comes together.
Good luck to us all.

| Feels like the cheaper of the cheap options! I dont understand replacing an in-experienced head coach with another, however it sounds like he is well respected in the club so good luck to him.

One may be happier to work within the constraints placed upon them.

| Rohan Smith seems to be doing ok. A short stint at Bradford and no NRL or SL experience and a similar age. Of course he has the all important accent but appear from that not much in it.
Plenty of coaches have taken over clubs with far less of a grounding than Applegarth and done just fine.
Apparently he’s one dimensional, well I quite like that because that dimension seems to be producing teams that win more often than they lose.
They also say that if your good enough your old enough, same applies to coaching.
I think he will find it hard to start with and will need to win over older players but that’s his challenge. Truth is that I’ve rarely seen so called experienced coaches manage that very often.
He’s Trinity to the core, it’s a good start. He knows the British game and he knows the quality of the players at other clubs. If we are on a budget that’s the knowledge you need.

| Shaun Wane and Matt Peet come to mind straight away, and Rohan Smith, as others have mentioned. A better option than a lifelong assistant fancying a go, which was the likeliest route.
I'm happy with it. It might turn out wrong. It might not. But that's the same for anyone who comes in.

| I like the appointment. If you look at the overall direction the club is going with the younger lads coming through. And success of academies/reserves/PDRL/WTLRL . It’s developing clear pathways in our own system which for me will be a lot more successful and sustainable going forward. With mash going through that same system on the coaching side. Hopefully the players buy in and our core group of British youth players plus with a couple quality overseas signings we can play a brand of rugby we can be proud of next year

| So i get there is some negative comments about mash but while i dont and wont pretend know him closley i have had many a chat with him i have listend to him in training and in the dug out i have also spoken to lads who have previously trained and played under him and currently do so and all have nothing but good to say about him he whips the whip when needed but praisers when required.he gets the best out of players.its common knowledge my lad is an academy player and i would say he has had a very successful year and if you ask him why he will say its alot to do with mash so give him a chance we know he wont have a massive budget but he will go well...
Plus any body want to see hus style in action get to wigan on sunday hes a frand final to win

| I can understand the reaction but he now needs supporting and judging on his team next year and how they perform.
I know a few things to be facts.
Nobody on this planet would work harder at making a success of the role. He’s literally the hardest worker in the room.
He’s a very good salesman he may not have the big name however he is very articulate and has the ability to get people to buy into him.
Nobody knows the club better from top to bottom.
Is it a risk? Yes.
Should we give him a chance? Absolutely, his first job will be appointing his fellow coaching team which could be as critical, if not more so than his appointment.
I can think of many coaches who have a knack of surrounding themselves with the right support staff, and had very good careers despite being limited as coaches, not that I’m saying Mash is by the way.
