| Solid in attack AND defence! Does not always set his winger free, but has done more this season. Deffo worth an extension for me! Best quality centre we have had for some time. If we don,t keep him I think there will be plenty of others that want to!

I don't really understand where you're going with it and you seem to be focused on the wrong centre position that was the weak link in our back line where they scored through, did you see the game?
In some posts from you Collis is very good and then the one that I quoted it says you are still to be convinced he has an effective offload game? The player is pure class end of. Maybe you're trying too hard to be controversial?

"Focused on the wrong centre position?" Do you think I am confusing Collis with another player?
Who mentioned anybody as being a weak link?
I see no contradiction whatsoever in agreeing that Collis is a very good centre, but I am yet to be convinced he has an effective offload game. There are plenty of very good centres about that don't have an effective offload game, but the thing that separates a very good centre from a top drawer one (Lyon, Gidley, Moon et al) is the ability to get rid of the ball and put his winger away in the collision, and on all seen form Collis is yet to prove he can do this consistently and at the top level.
Maybe you're not trying hard enough to read or understand?

I give up 10 tries in 13 matches so far for Collis with his winger Fox scoring 12 tries in the same amount of matches. There isn't an issue to look at for me when Mellars scored 3 in 12 last year and 1 in 5 this year albeit he has played out of position this year. He couldn't bend his back to take that pass from Cockayne with the line beckoning other day and didn't create space for Cockayne throughout the match.

| Last season I would have said Collis didnt feed his winger enough that might have been due to them getting familiar with how they play and the slight injury he appeared to be carrying. This season has been different and we have seen a well fit and able Collis and him feed Fox when its needed plus his defence has been good.

You give up what? Discussing rugby league on a rugby league forum?
Collis and Fox have a great partnership that scores us plenty of points? Absolutely, Collis has been our most dangerous player by far in my opinion this year, more effective than even Ali and his contribution probably as important to us as that of Timmy Smith.
Mellers isn't in the same street and is a player we should be looking to replace with better in order to improve? Dead right, an odd decent shift away at Wigan is a poor return regardless of playing out of position.
Out of interest, do you think Collis has an effective offload game or not?

I'm guessing it's a yes as it has been from almost everyone else.

| At risk of complicating the argument even further - the centre's ability to offload is dependant on the winger running the right line; does Foxy always do that?

He does to be fair, that's probably why he's on 12 it's a great partnership - bit of luck could have been 14.

If it is, then that's fair enough. Personally, I think that one offload every 2 games or so isn't a good enough return to be deemed an effective offload game for a centre, if others do then that's their prerogative. People have differing views, and come on here to debate them, no?
I fully agree that Collis is a very classy player and the best we have had in that position since probably before Domic as different as they are/were. I agree that unless his wage demands are unreasonable we should be doing everything we can to tie him down for as long as possible. I agree that he is probably our most effective offensive weapon this year and his ability to draw his man and create space for the winger is extremely good. I just don't agree we have seen an effective offload game from him, that's all. If nobody else agrees then I can live with that, if they want to chew the fat over it and challenge my opinion then that's all well and good too.
Just like has been posted elsewhere about Timmy Smiths defense, if his defense was better then he probably wouldn't be with us - I think if Collis had the offloading game of a Joel Moon (for example) then he too would be plying his trade elsewhere in my opinion.

I thought it was a discussion, not an argument.
I would agree to an extent that a centre relies on his winger to be in a position to receive the ball - but seen as Fox doesn't seem to have a problem timing or running the right line when it comes to the draw and pass that Collis effectively executes on a regular basis - so would be inclined to think that this isn't a massive factor. Maybe Collis doesn't have the confidence to put the pass out of the backdoor more regularly like he did on Saturday for the try - but the number of times he commits the defender and I think if only he could slip it out makes me think it's more than just the winger.
Fox is another debate, can't quite make my mind up if he deserves less stick, more stick or if he gets just the right amount of stick I think he must be doing plenty right for us to get the return from him that we do, but he does tend to have more than his fair share of comedy errors during the course of any game!

| Well Tommy you are watching a different Collis to me.
I feel he judges well when to give the ball and when to retain it and avoid his winger being bundled into touch.

Fox, on recent form, would walk into most SL teams. The tries aside, I don't know what progress upfield we would have made without him and Ben Cockayne, they've been as effective in that aspect as any of our forwards!

| Dean Collis is good at knowing when to pass and when not to, which is a different point altogether than the offload game people are referring to (like Big Ali). My interpretation of an offload is passing the ball when tackled, whereas Collis tends to commit the defender before passing the ball and he is very selective when doing so.
I'd rather have someone passing selectively and intelligently than offloading at every opportunity. Richard Moore probably used to offload a dozen times a game at one point, but usually to no-one in particular. I know what i'd rather have.

Our top 3 metre makers are Cockayne, Fox and Mathers with a combined effort of 3846M
That says a lot about the way our team is set up to play and I think the 3 of them do a fantastic job in getting us moving.
I would agree that Fox is prone to the odd blunder but I think you'd have to say he more than makes up for it through effort. I very rarely notice him "lose a collision", he generally makes at least another 5 metres once hit by tacklers through sheer leg power.
Collis is 6th in terms of Metres made but top in terms of Average Gain per carry. With 6 tries and 7 try assists to his name also, I would love to see him signed up on a longer term contract.

| Like others have said, he's a cracking player but if he's asking more than we can afford then let him go. I can't see any other reason for him not being renewed tbh, he's already said he wants to stay, so over to the money men to make it happen!

| What's the rush? He can't leave us unless we want him to and he can't talk to others until next April. What about if we signed him up long term and he got a long injury or his form went through the floor? People would be going crazy and i bet someone would suggest he did it on purpose. Just because he wants a new deal doesn't mean we have to do it right now.

I meant argument in the less combative sense i.e another word for a discussion!
I'm between two posts on this one and in the end, you're probably right; if he could flick out accurate offloads in every collision, he'd be at Wigan or Leeds, not Wakey. I had the same discussion at the game on Saturday in regard to Tim Smith - if he could produce the magic touch every play AND bend 'em in half in defence, he'd be plying his trade in the NRL.
We are Wakefield Trinity, where the whole has to be significantly more than the sum of its parts.

Agree completely - we're not going to be in a position to cherry pick the players we want (not for the short/medium term at least) so we need to be cute in those that we sign and hope the waifs, strays, chancers and unfinished/incomplete players we do get hold of improve and gel together like they have in the past.
Any road, lets hope that Collis gets the ball away in traffic on a more regular basis - but only after he has put pen to paper on a new deal for us of course.
