If we accept that we can't afford a top player at his peak (or wouldn't attract one), we have four choices:
1. Grow our own
2. Recruit from the lower leagues and hope they seize the chance (think Blaymire, Wilkes, etc)
3. Go down under
4. Get a top player past their peak.

Option 4 is always the riskiest option, as it is probably the most expensive. Newton would not be a gamble for me. Newton is a good player because he is competitive, and would probably be willing to break your arm to get to the last tin of beans in Asda. That's what drives him, and you don't lose that, and he would do well here.

Recruitment wise though, a Lee Gilmour is what we need, not a hooker.

We do look to have some good kids coming through at the moment but look terribly short in the threequarters for next season ...

Newton is just a cheap shot thug I dont want him anywhere near Belle Vue next season barr the one game when we have to play against him

I was thinking of Southernwood to be honest. Skilled young players like him require a minder. With Rooney gone I see him getting a place next year, he looks ready enough.

I don't think there's any doubting his abilty it's just the record of him knocking peoples heads off and the view that he ain't scared or bothered to do it! Saying that we've had a few players in the last few years who have calmed down alot under kear ie Moore Wilkes bibey etc. Whether he can do
it with Newton is another question!
