| Quote ="The Trip"I really do fear the the game in this country. A club like Hull take on a clearly overweight and unfit 31 yr old journeyman aussie and throw him straight into the team at full back against Leeds. Surely they should be giving a chance to some of their young kids because your not telling me there isn't any in that city who would die to pull on the Black and White.
Not having a dig at McGoldrick whom I believe is a really decent bloke but its not doing our game any favours.
Tonight's game was appalling to watch and reffed by what can only be termed as a schoolboy. That's 3 dreadful games from this country this week on Sky and one belter with the S of O.
Our game over here is in need of major surgery and quick.'"
Well said that man

| As I've said before - pull up the drawbridge to overseas players, put a limit on the number of games a player can participate in during one season and compel pro and semi-pro clubs to forge meaningful links with amateur clubs; at the moment, we see academy scouts once or twice a year who have a quick word with the Dads of your big lads in the car park, and that's about it - it's not good enough. There should be a national curriculum for junior RL coaching that sets a standard and is properly overseen and monitored by the governing body - there are too many morons involved in amateur and jr rugby who just want to win every week, with no idea how to equip young players with the right skillset and attitude to make the step up.
I agree, the game needs a complete overhaul and we should start by forgetting about the Aussies for ten years and getting our own house in order, from grassroots up.

| Limiting the number of games a player can participate in would help solve the problem of overplaying which Peacock is always complaining about.
But when it actually came to it would he and the present so called big clubs really be in favour as it would lead to an evening up of the competition.
I think I know the answer to that.

They don't have to be in favour of it, they just have to do it; it wouldn't be too big a stretch for a coach to have to manage his squad in such a way that younger players are given a route into the first team that doesn't rely on injuries to established names and isn't hindered by the surplus of average Aussies that are sloshing around the English game.
Cut the quota to 2, close all the stupid loopholes and limit the number of games - if people won't behave virtuosly, sometimes you have to force them.

at the recent yorkshire v lancashire under14s match at cas panthers the only scouts in attandance were warrington and wigan. at the junior cup finals last month on the saturday the only scouts there were wigan, on the sunday the only scouts there were wigan and bradford.
the junior game in yorkshire is in a bad state. there is so many leagues its a joke. west riding league, hull league, yorkshire youth, yorkshire juniors, for gods sake have one body run the game and make it yorkshire. some play winter, some play summer, teams dont like summer, teams dont like winter, someone needs to get a grip and tell some of these power peed idiots to do one.
odd teams are coached well, some teams/players cant pass at 16 its just poor. since the coaching badges were introduced by the rfl the standard as got worse not better, its all robot, robot robot.
looking at different areas, featherstone got 6 turn up for an open age match the other week, they had three teams not so long ago, a fev junior team playing with 11. bradford, hardly any kids playing to a decent standard and maybe 1 school playing, thats it. castleford, no team up airedale. the rfl need to go to fev and ask why this is happening when they have had such great history of producing there own.
the life is being strangled out of the game, bring back prom/rele give places hope. the rfl are pathetic, run by idiots who appoint idiots top bring players through.
bring back the gb team market properly and give the game back to the people instead of taking stupid game to cardiff and ireland where no one gives a toss.
central contract the top players so they wont sod off to ru.
rugby league is in a right mess and to me looks like becoming a second rate or dying sport.
a piece of advice to any parent of a junior, if you know what your doing develop them yourselves, dont trust these junior coaches to do it cause most of them are just people been thrown in with no knowledge of the game.

| I agree with all you said Bren apart from limiting games.
It will lower the quality in some games, be hard to administrate, and the big games would be in the media and only thing talked about would be who is missing.
Can you imagine the challenge cup games? It would be just U20.
Limit overseas by all means and definitely enforce links and coach training but the best should be able to play as long as they are capable.

Good - that's the whole point.
The standard of some matches would indeed be lower and it would be that way for quite a few years; that, to me, is a small price to pay to breathe new life back into RL and create genuine opportunities for young players to learn their trade.
Mopsey - I couldn't agree more; all of the above is pointless unless young lads are arriving at pro clubs with a proper skillset, taught from U8's onwards - as it is, the standard of coaching and supervision at some amateur clubs is absolutely dreadful.

Could not agree more.My lad is just coming to end of u11s season and they have only lost 4 out of 26 so far which is excellent. The only problem being there are a couple of kids who refuse to pass and just want to score all the tries which now is beginning to see the others turn on them but the coach even though a nice guy will not sort it even though everybody can see it just cos they are winning but only cos of individual play and not team work which is seeing them through.I believe next year when in a league and cups they will struggle as winning at all costs is a must but think the basics of passing and team play are sadly missing.

I watched helplessly for years other lads just run the ball along the line until they find a gap to score,
I hate it but it seems to be the norm now to get notched to further there own career.
its only this season in the u14s have I seen a deeper attacking line as previously been more flatter and less affective

| Some excellent points Bren & Mopsey. I've been advocating limiting players for a while and people don't seem to want to see the long term benefits. Players like peacock really wind me up when they go on about injuries and fatigue etc (usually after he and his peers have had their customary Aussie hiding!) and the same players are the ones putting their hands up to play when they're not fit!!! It's so frustrating to see and hear fresh and innovative ideas from people who love the game being dismissed by those supposedly running the game.

They have an attacking line but a couple of kids run across it past everybody until there is no room then either end up in touch, set up a union style maul cos they r panicking or they find the gap they r looking for but the others don't back up cos they know the pass isn't coming. There are props in the centres or at
Fb cos they aren't being told they are just hoping to get the ball and score and that's them done for the day,but while they are winning it won't change and when they do lose its a fault in defence not a missed pass which would have resulted in a try.

yep it the same old where ever you go, we have some like that in our team even now but now they do hold station more
my lads been very disappointed this season and has failed to impress to reach the next level and I know why, we intend to make sure he gets my full attention after the summer break and prove that he can. his fitness or lack of it has been his down fall

I don't think that's uncommon - it seems that quite a few jr players struggle in that regard, especially the bigger lads who've perhaps got a bit too used to barging their way through or crashing over the line and end up relying on that, to the exclusion of other facets of their game.
We've just started a fitness programme to run alongside regular training for our U13's; we're also talking to the health promotion team at Wakefield PCT, to see if we can get someone to come down and give them a talk on diet and nutrition. Our hope is that as well as helping them in rugby terms, we'll also encourage some good habits that will stick with them as they get older, whether they continue with rugby league or not.
The whole thing kicks off this Wednesday night - we've got a special guest trainer coming down to give them an insight into the training regime of a pro player; should be fun!
