| And Obst has been linked to Bradford.
Smith is an adequate hooker but a poor signing if hes going to play scrum half. May as well re-signed Cooke, hes better and at least he wouldn't have been on the quota.

To be honest he's pretty poor without a Brough type player to compliment his style of play, I don't think Smith is that person so it makes sense if it was Jeffries to make way.

Was my worry we already have Thackeray and need a kicking half back where as Jeffries is also a running half like Thacks!

| I am not the type of person to criticise departing players and I'll give you an honest assessment. When Salford signed him he was playing reserve grade in the NRL and McRae said he was the kind of player needed to get the team around the park. The Salford fans had high expectations of him because he was a former New Zealand International. After watching him play 2/3 times I was disappointed but put it down to him not playing top level football for a while. During his first season he did improve a little and I couldn't fault his work rate. The problem is for a halfback I don't feel he creates enough and his kicking game is less than average on a good day. One of his biggest faults is his disapline, he tends to give away quite a few penalities. If i'm being truthful I would say he isn't capable of playing halfback at Superleague level and I was pleased when McRae played him as an interchange hooker towards the end of this season. This position seems to suit him better and in fairness he did OK for us in this role and looked more dangerous. When I heard he was being released I wasn't surprised because I'd imagine he was on a fairly big contract. This said I would have kept him on a reduced contract as an interchange hooker for next year if he wasn't a quota player. For Wakefield maybe just maybe John Kear will be able to get much more out of him? but I wouldn't put your house on him being the answer to any problems you may think you have.

| dont see what this brings that latu didnt.
strange signing to be honest, and maybe more important as to whos leaving than to whos coming, if it is jefferies or obst im afraid its more of an indication to me of the problems we really have , especially if its jefferies as hes on a longer deal.

| BJ is tied into a 3 year deal. So we should get a fee for him if he leaves. Really hope its not Obst that isnt going!! That would just indicate where we are heading for, NL1.

| I'll give the guy every chance to prove himself.
He'll be wearing a Trin shirt for next season so I'll reserve judgement until I see him with my own eyes.

| John Kear quote
=#FF4080“It’s also a major advantage for us that Jeremy has experience of Super League. He will be aware of the challenges we face in 2011 and be fully prepared.”
Does he know something but will not say it?

To be fair though some players have known to be below average at one club and then be a world beater at another. Time will tell I suppose, but how many people declared Sam Obst was a bad signing

That's about the size of it, we're that skint that we can't afford to get rid of anyone but contracted players cos there's some cash in it.
if it's the case (and it was with brough, atkins) what an absolute disgrace, it goes to show how we have been run into the ground by the Richardsons!!!
Players going for a bit of brass, and we still can't pay our way, we truly are up the creek!!!

true but hes been below average at a club with all due respect has been poor for a few seasons now. He was down the pecking order at half back behind holdsworth, smith, ratchford then sneyd when he came in. just hope the change can do him good

| As mentioned earlier, when he started to interchange at hooker towards the end of this season he actually played his best rugby for Salford but that one handed pick up, whilst creating a few opportunities, resulted into several knock-ons and made him look rather foolish.
If he is coached well, and Kear is better than McRae, he could be a good player but I for one am happy to see him leave Salford. I will never forget his flippant attitude. The amount of passes he has missed due to lack of observation and sometimes even turning his back to the play is ridiculous. He played every game in his first season at the Willows and never had a good one. What McRae was thinking by keeping him on the pitch was anyones guess!!
BTW That comment about us taking Gleeson, classic

| You'll see! Hopefully you won't, he started off well for us, and was great for the Irish in the world cup, but his game almost disintigrated this season. Good luck to him, hope he does you well.

I have heard a rumour that Rooney is going to Bradford next year so I doubt they would be in the market for Obst.
Regards Smith, has been poor so far in SL hopefully his form will pick up whilst at Trinity and he can find the consistency his game really lacks.

FFS you don't really believe that do you
However if you are right, how desperate must Bradford be.
Anyway, have you heard anymore of these Wigan Lads we were supposed to be signing.

| cant believe we have signed a player who was deemed not good enough for a struggling side like salford. Who are we going to compete with next year? certainly not cas or salford who have made quality signings. Bit fed up

Not one of my most reliable sources but it came from a current Fev first teamer who told me about Smith a few days ago.
I assume any Wigan player movement will be announced after Wigan go out of the comp, so hopefully you will have to wait another few days yet.

| I'm about to stick up for Smith, so most Salford fans are probably going to slate me now. However, he signed an autograph for my 5 month old son at his first game the other week.
Smith does have the vision and skill to put other players in space/through a gap. The downside is, he just doesn't seem motivated. Looking in from the outside, McRae seems to be carrying the can and his lack of motivation seems to rub off on some of the players.
I am well aware Kear isn't the most popular with many Wakefield fans, but you wouldn't to swap, and I'm in doubt Wakefield will get more out Jeremy Smith.
