From Fitzy, he was actually a better winger than the 2nd David Jones, maybe not such a cult hero but he knew how to play the position better.

St Pats version would have been great if he'd ever learned to run at gaps instead of players, if he was put in the clear I swear he would of gone out of his way to try and run over someone.

Lampkowski was a fantastic player.

A player people seem to forget is Ian Brooke.
Lightning quick GB centre also v good stand off.

Also what about Big Neils ideal centre partner South African Alan Skene.
Also fellow South African Gert Oupa Coetzer.
Then the incomparible Poynton.

I know many older fans who say the Neil Fox couldnt have done nearly as much had Alan Skene not done his tackling for him. Lots o great partnerships have that relationship, one a grafter the other a points machine.

For my money Brian Juliff is the best winger I can remember very very underrated he went on to make a decent 2nd row forward too

Solomona wasn't fit to lace the boots of big Bill Ashurst. Bill was far and away the best second row forward I have ever seen in over 50 years of watching the game. He was an absolute gem, he had pace, power, a football brain second to none and a better offload than Solomona!

BA also had a good short kicking game, was a dirty sod and he could fight

Lamps was far more dynamic than Morro and he was, despite appearances, a clever footballer so while I respect Glen, Mike gets my vote here.

Keith Smith would be one of the best centres in the world were he to be playing today! Ryan Atkins is Physicaly strong and has decent pace but Smithy was about 6'1 (a giant in his era) and not slow himself but he was gifted with the ball in hand, he had a step, a feint, a dummy and silky skills that Atkins will only dream about.

The young Andy Kelly at 6'4" and 17.5st had the pace and athleticism of a centre he ran over players for fun and I struggle to remember another player who hit wide balls with as much speed. In his first stint with Wakefield he was simply unplayable at times even by the top clubs of his era. Mick Jackson was quick and powerfully but lacked the size of Andy although he certainly took the eye when hitting a gap he wasn't the type to steamroller the opposition like Kelly did.

Bill Ashurst as stated above was an amazing player, Trinity fans perhaps didn't see him at his best but still he was magical at times. Big, Brutal but with amazing handling ability in all situations, he could show the ball and have the opposition, spectators, cameras and officials all watching someone else while he strolled away still in possession. Solo was/is magical at times but despite his gifted offload he's a pale imitation of Ashurst.

Les Sheard and Gary Spencer seemed very similar and it's hard to split them, I'd go with Spencer because he was a better tackler and had better positional sense as a fullback. His lack of real pace, he wasn't slow just not fast, rarely caught him out because he played the position so well, if he got close enough to touch the opposition he'd bring them down, he was also a great support player, so Spencer gets the vote.

Graham Idle played in a superb Trinity pack that contained the likes of Skerrett, the Rayne twins, Ashurst, McCurrie, Burke while Nigel Bell was a colossus of a poor Wakefield team. Bellys longevity and consistency wins this one for me although Idle shares many of his attributes.

Alan McCurrie would have been a revelation were he playing today, he did much of what we revere Cameron Smith for, kicking, handling, leadership etc. he was often too good for the players around him and his level of thinking often came to naught because some team mates weren't on his wavelength. Hookers who deserve a mention are Billy Conway perhaps our best hooker since McCurrie and Matt Fuller who was prominent for a couple of years.

If he had a better offload than Solo, we youner ones really have missed something special. Solomona is the most gifted all round (not refering to his prestnt physique) player i've seen wear a Trin shirt.

My post may seem like I'm being a bit hard on Solo', this is not my intention as I regard him as being a bit 'special' as well! I just remember the newspaper headlines the first time that Ashurst played for us, I believe it was a Friday night at Featherstone. The paper said 'Ashurst roamed the field like a Colossus' the point being that he wasn't just a left sided player, he was devastating from anywhere on the pitch-despite all his effort we lost!
Trinity signed him for what was I believe a world record fee at the time of £18000! Not bad for only twenty odd games - he was no doubt crocked when we signed him, (nice one Wigan!) but I for one am glad we did.

Bill Ashurst is the best player I have ever seen play he was way before his time if he played today he would have being the best 2nd row forward in the world

any defence, his passing ability was devastating a fit bill ashurst and trinity would have won the cup in 79

Not only was Bill Ashurst a great player but a brilliant man off the field as well!

I saw them both play (though I was young in 70s) and I have to say I'd chose Solomona.
Different styles but simply the fact that Ashurst had injuries and had seen better days, whereas Solomona was at the hight of his powers....Solomona for me.

This is an interesting one for me.

Danny is 100% effort, does the little things right, times his runs well, can find a gap or burst a tackle.
Ellis had a little bit more skill IMO, tackled a lot harder and could still do the other things that Danny does.

I'd have to pick Ellis but it would be close.
