| I like to speak as I see as well and if someone thinks he's only had two good games all season either they know naff all about RL or they have a serious agenda going on where Tim Smith is concerned.

| Great news a quality player , and we would be better still if and when we sign two props who take us forward . He has looked good and will look better still when he is playing on the front foot.

| Quote ="BrisbaneRhino"Genuine question - has Smith shown any sign of developing a running game at all? When he started with Parra he looked the goods in terms of passing and kicking (I remember Peter Sterling being genuinely hopeful that he could be the real deal for them for years), but opponents soon worked out that he was absolutely zero threat ball in hand, and he started to look very ordinary.'"
Fair points all - but players change.
TBH I can never see Smith having a brilliant running game but it's adequate for us. He's also pretty big for a 7 so he's never going to be a livewire - but then the British game is full of livewires without a first class RL brain which is why so many young H/B end up as hookers.
I reckon Smith won't get caught out in SL, one because he and his team have improved this season and two because it's SL.
That said he score a beauty against Cas at Manchester so he can run the ball - just not as often as some. He needs players around him who will.

| Fantastic news!
Smith is our game manager - he runs the show and, when Tim has a good game - so do we! He is as good as we will get and is better than several better paid halves currently in the game.
He has developed with the side and it seems like the confidence level in him is really strong now - which is important in a half-back (ask Danny Brough right now).
The one year deal is no reflection on either player or club, just a family preference given the recent arrival.
Well chuffed - need to find a 6 that compliments his playing style now!

| Quote ="upthecats"Excellent news!!
Could have been a bit better news if it was a little longer, but could suit both club and player.....at least he's here for another year and will be even better next I reckon!
Can't believe the negativity around this fella......he's top drawer and has shown it on many, many occasions this season......I must be watching a different game sometimes....
'"
As our friend Brisbane stated he's not got a great running game. For many RL fans if a HB is not bouncing around like a demented monkey then he's no good. They love a Rob Burrows who is the best of the breed but still lacks a real RL HB mind.
Oh well. Some players never impress the hordes, Bibey never did despite the fastest PTB I've seen and thus a constant pain to the opposition but they loved Korki. Raleigh is another, twice the player than Crabtree is but but he doesn't stick out with Crabtree and his apparently barnstorming runs that always see him on his backside catching the eye. But you tell Code 13 and the other Hudds cyclopses that. I can neme dozens of unsung Wakey players.
He'll never please a section of the crowd in a way Aiton or Woods do, but he will create more than either (and I am a massive Aiton fan).

I can see where my Owl friend is coming from though.
I personally think TS does bring a lot & is an important player in this team, so this is a good move IMO - but he does have quite a few nightmare moments and can be extremely frustrating.

| Like any good half back tim will pick his moments to run the ball and when he does he usually picks the right time. We don't need a half back to attack the line all the time. To me that's just asking to be clobbered and without him we will look lost. He may not be a decent defender but is not one who give up as he did chasing George to the corner on sunday made sure it was outwide.

Generally I agree. He shows real class at times but is playing (bored with saying it) behind a beaten pack. And he is really not the sort of half who can take the big guys on, loike Danny Brough can; more the silky smooth passer and link to the strong centres kind of guy (which we are also less than well endowed with). But I would keep him and bring in players that compliment a king pin like he might be. I could see it working

| Great news - he's been one of our best overall this season, despite an uncertain start.
Whomever suggested that he's only had 2 decent games must be watching a different team to the one I watch every week - that's total claptrap.

The person that never does anything never makes a mistake. I think this extension is brilliant for both club and player. What he does do more than makes up for anything that doesent come off for him.

| Really pleased, well done Timmy.
The bloke is a great reader of the game & if the forwards can buy him some room he’ll do the business.
However, some people have alluded to the point that they don’t know which Mr Smith will turn up, unfortunately, IMO neither does he, which is a shame. But if he was on his game every week, he would be playing in the NRL.

| I would put Smith as one of the best passes of the ball we have had in a long time.
We have had some great players....
Wally Lewis without question the best long pass in the world
David Solomona the best pass out of the tackle I've seen
Nigel Wright gifted player, always very accurate passer
David Topliss passing at speed was exceptional
Smith is up there for me. Not the top, but up there.
One thing we lack in attack is the ability to take the ball at speed and get the defense on the back foot. What he does is put the ball in the exact place for the player to catch while sprinting. No reaching up no streching forward.
For years you have seen a back line passing where they have to stop themselves to catch the ball and by the time they are back to speed the defense has got them
All we need now is some players who can play with him.
And one of the ones who will in my opinion be able to do this is Lee Smith. He has played with players like that before. The try against Giants showed that. (Unfortunately the mistake showed he has some work to do too!)

this is probably the key phrase, me and my mates have discussed the fact that we think Tim Smith is sometimes too "quick" (in mind) for the players around him.
some of this will come from playing with him, some is pure natural talent.
glad we have signed smith, he is better and does more than many people think.

Well I think I'll base my opinion on more than one game at Hudds
I know you want a Toppo type player and rightly so as Sykes is clearly not and never will be in that class. However there are few of those about even in the NRL and we certainly won't find one by next season and even if we did it's probably a 10 game learning curve so get to understand the somewhat maverick Smith. Sykes has done that quickly, probably because he will submit to being the straight man - something a Toppo type player would never do.
So for me and it's just my opinion - if it's not broke don't fix it. Sykes will allow Smith to be even better next season and that alone makes him worth his place. I'm all for ambition but lets not run before we can walk - especially as I don't see Smith stopping in the UK for a prolonged period either with us or any other club. I reckon two good seasons in SL will win him a place back in the NRL. If I saw Smith as a 5 year player then yep but we won't build a team around him IMHO.

| Dont know if Smith will be here for 5 years it might be that with his past problems when he originally came it was a case of him only wanting a 12 month contract.Has said hes enjoying it here so was easy to sign another contract, again just for 12 month.Might be he is thinking if things go pear shaped in his life he wont have any trouble walking away and wont be letting anyone down.Glad we have him thats for sure and think next season now the other players are used to him we will see even better things more so depending on who sign/bring in.

Re-signing players who were thought not good enough previously is a sign of club lacking in ambition.
If Leeds have any ambitions of becoming a top 4 club, they should stay well clear.
No way would he fit their style of play. Don't be fooled by a couple of OK performances against his former club. I've never even seen him challenge a refereeing decision.
I'd expect a fans' revolution in Leeds if they take Amor back. You have been warned.
... now I think about it, Leeds fans do tend towards the revolting.

| I genuinely wasn't trying to have a dig at Smith BTW, and agree that if anything SL halfbacks tend to be able to run around and have no passing or kicking game. My point was that the best halfbacks can run, pass and kick (I find it astonishing that SL hasn't produced a single British player who can do all 3 to a reasonable level).
Smith's problem in the NRL was that without a running game, his passing and kicking tended to be predictable and easy to defend because defenders knew that was all he would do. That was probably why he was so frustrating to watch as he got older, because for most young halfbacks the kicking and passing are harder skills to master, and Smith had the full range of both from the start of his NRL career.
