Extremely important. Lets cast our mind back to the game V Bradford (at Odsal) in the final few rounds in 2006. The relegation survival year.
JD retrieved a kick through in his in goal area and beat 4/5 players to get out. The rest of the team was buoyed and lifted their game, That is an example captains action.
JD was more than just a 'action' captain. He was a leader of men. He had a positive effect in the dressing room because people respected him. The more respect you have for someone, the more you are inspired by them. The players saw how much Trinity meant to JD, there captain and followed suite. It is simple as that really?

| What were people expecting with Southern, he has been crap for years. English clubs really need to stop signing NRL garbage.

| Thanks for those replies frogcat and kingsway cat. Odd to stick someone as captain who is a new signing from overseas then, and obviously not a Lewis/Langer level player.

Didn't he play at 2nd row last night?
Or should I say, named in 2nd row. Play is not really the right description!!!!!!

| Some people??!!
How anyone can be singled out on the last 2 performances I do not know?? Apart from Fox and Cockayne they have all been below average at best!
In some ways at least Southern has an excuse whats the rest of the sides problem??!
If he is to be relieved then I can only see Washbrook or Aiton as options.

See where you are coming from but it could also make him try and do more, make more mistakes and start to get the crowd on his back. Aiton for me

| From the Widnes game to last night, Southern looks a completely different player. He's definitely out of sorts. Whether it's off the field or not, something isn't right.

| I sincerely hope the club are giving him and his family the help and support they need if this is the case.
Ideally we get a fit and happy Steve Southern back on the field ASAP or worst case back on a plane home (:
Bottomline for SS - his family have to come first

| Steve Southern should be dropped on form from the 17 as should Paul Johnson for the next couple of games. If he has issues he needs supporting & time off. This along with injuries to Lauititi and Kirmond represents an opportunity for a revamped pack for the next couple of games.
Put in Walshaw,Mariano,James and Trout and see how they go.
Give the armband to Paul Aiton until Kirmond gets back and play him at loose forward and Ellis at 9.

And bottom line for me is the club comes first ! we are a rugby club not an effing social agency.
He gets paid handsomely he either delivers or leaves.

Employment law would disagree with you, not to mention common decency; the guy is having some problems off the field and like all employers, we are required to treat him in a way that is fair and reasonable.
Let's not get silly.

Thats a bit extreme, if he's having problems (and thats just a rumour) then we should be helping out.

| Give the guy a break, he hasn't been at his best and i'm sure he'd be the first to admit it. He's been shifted around and looks to be struggling because of it. I wouldn't give up on him yet, and there's plenty of players who struggled in their first SL season and since then have become valuable first teamers.
Hopefully, we can get him fit, enjoying his rugby and playing to his potential

Wasn't Betham captain then? The point stands regardless Lord knows we need a JD figure on the field right now.

Do you know I wasn't aware of that. In my last job when my sales figures were low I should have used that excuse with my employers I bet they would have allowed me plenty of leaway and given me an easy life at the companies expense.

I could write an essay, but I won't, as I'm pretty sure you already know that the two situations are completely different and are just being facetious.

| certainly not at his best recently but not our worst player by any means.
but we cant have the captain only putting in 40 mins max, we need a leader to lead not keep the subs bench warm.

Funnily enough, that was the first name that sprang to my mind too. Judging by his reaction to the mistakes he made in the game against Catalan, he obviously cares. Could be the making of the man, and if it is, then everyone's a winner.
P:S: I shared exactly the same reservations about him as you before he signed for us.

Maybe he didn't feel he could do himself justice by playing when not 100%. Unlike Mathers who wanted to play when nowhere near right and left us a man down for a large part of the game.
