Can't say as I've heard many jokes about the disaster yet. Generally been a bit quicker for others such as 9/11, Bopal, Chinese Cockle Pickers, Lord Mountbatten, Lady Di, Holocaust, Titanic, Pakistani Earthquake, Chernobyl etc, etc, etc.

We have freedom of speach in this country which alos covers social networking sites. Also a joke is a joke and if people take jokes seriously then the joke is on them IMO.

I would say that 99% of jokes poke fun at other people and/or their misfortune.

Bailey is scum always has been always will be! Its part of his game, unfortunately it works well on the field on most occasions (radford getting sent off for hitting him in on the floor). He's a wind up merchant and a thug.

Off field activities should be punished, he has been in trouble for fighting on and off the pitch, so maybe words don't hurt you physically but his attacks probs do! plus getting paid a decent wage like that for doing something he loves, should be able to control what he says on facebook or whatever!

What irritates me is people being offended on other peoples behalf.
I told a suicide joke once and a woman i worked with many moons ago had a go at me then reported me, my boss couldn't be bothered and threw it out.
When it died down slightly i asked her if anyone had committed suicide in her life for her to react like that, she said no but it was offensive. I then told her not to get offended on other peoples behalf to which she replied how would i feel if it was someone i knew to which i replied you mean like my own dad 2 years ago.

At the end of the day being offensive is subjective, i'm not offended but what i did learn was if you think someone may be offended keep it within your circle.

Just give him a warning on his future conduct and leave it at that.

You're on thin ice there IMHO. Many jokes are based on peoples misfortune (see Have I go news for you). Nothing wrong with it so long as someone draws the line somewhere.

That's the achilles heel of comedy or free speech in general and no ones ever come up with the answer - best advice, if you don't like it don't read, listen to or watch it.

If you ever read my posts apart from the times when i'm being sarcastic i'm usually balanced and fair, i very rarely wear my P&B glasses. If some Wire fans were getting angry that's because they are not me.

I don't see this facination or fashion with being offended, eg the Ross/Brand situation the original amount of complaints were in single figures, the papers print it, it goes to thousands.

People are getting petty and pathetic so he told a joke, it doesn't change the situation in Japan, extra people haven't died because he didn't see fit to not post it.

The fact that this word was used by a foreigner who probably did not understand the horrors associated with that word by many people is, to my mind, ironic. Somebody complaining about the non-rascist use of a word with a rascist history by a foreigner who possibly did not know it had rascist connotations - is that rascist?

Interestingly I thought that at the time... now I live in Sydney, indeed in the area that Leo Latu lived and worked, and I understand the multi racial, pseudo gangland sub culture that many ethnic australian groups subscribe to, I am more convinced that it was a cultural misunderstanding of common slang in one culture not transferring into another culture.

We all have our views on the political correctness of humour... I have found many such topical jokes very funny indeed, but only if I depersonalise the situation. The fact I have found a structured group of words moulded around an unpleasant set of circumstances funny, does not mean that, in truth I do not care deeply about the situation, the affected peoples and wish to help with the solution or interim action.

I feel that most of us depersonalise ourselves from the reality of the world in order to simply survive the trauma in which we constantly live.

I only get offended by humour when it is clear that the humour was meant to be offensive.




Bailey's crime was "passing on" a funny, and I am sure he meant no offence or harm, a funny if told over a pint would bring raucous laghter, but when written down becomes as an act of treason.
