| Quote ="chapster"doesn't the school library do that???
i mean sorry if im missing the point here at all?'"
I would guess that the idea is that the kids go home and tell mum and dad or whoever that they've been to the library and about all the books they have their and encourage them all to go to the library. Also public libraries will have more books to choose from and have allsorts of other things such as book bags that have actiities based around the book that the child is reading. Surely we should be offering children as many opportunities as possible rather than restricting them to 1 book a week or so from the shool library?
You are probably missing the point because it doesn't affect you.

No they didn't I was responding to your point about the school library.
I did not suggest that you shouldn't have an opinion because it didn't affect you merely that yo were missing the point because it didn't affect you.
How much more dull can it get we're discussing libraries?!

It's no wonder the kids are as thick as mince these days if that's the attitude the teachers take. Shame on you, sir...

| I think chapster has a case of "I'm alright Jack". I use the library and every time I go in the computers are always full and the place is busy. It is between Flanshaw and Lupset, so serving two big estates. Not everybody is mobile enough or can even afford bus fares every day to travel further afield. I for one think it is a great shame for the local community and the people I have spoke to in the area are gutted.

that's exactly right mate, I attended English Martyrs. RC school just up the road and remember spending many hours in Flanshaw Library.
It was my first introduction to such a place and Ive always made a point of going back there for books on a regular basis, My kids, now26, 21, 19, 17 & 15 all use the library as well.
Talking to a number of people and Reading this thread leads me to wonder where the notion of it being under used comes from.

i pay my money to horbury school which is in the wakefield area..this benefits that school and the children who attend there. i don't know the arrangement with the school and the library / council but if there is no alternative then the school and the initiative that it has shown will lose money..i don't think it matters that i do not live in the area.
as for the quote about what wakefield council send there money on..well it is definately not on sporting facilites is it? my son plays football for a wakefield team also and we get "jack " from the council..perhaps if he played somewhere in cas where YOUR council prefer there would be benefits !!

I think with that many kids you could have been better off going to the chemist than the library Rick

There have been occasions when their efforts have been rather less than helpful. Regardless of that anyway, it doesn't stop people holding an opinion on what is a separate issue.

It is sad when facilities that are council run are shut & people lose there jobs.
My sister lives in Wakefield & has commented that the area is swelling population wise,so more of a drain on council resources?.
For some to blame it on people east of Wakefield(most tax payers like me)
on any decision the council makes is a bit harsh. Obviously club rivalries cloud their comments a tad.

Wakefield Council is run by councillors from 'The East' due to the fact that is where the majority of the labour seats are. If you look at the political map you will see that in City and the surrounding wards Labour has lost control. Many of the councillors out in 'The East' have no interset in Wakefield whatsever but yet they control what happens here. If you also do your homework you will find that most of the richest wards are also around Wakefield. In that I mean where wards contribute more to the financial pot than they take out. You will also see that the wards to the east take out more than they put in.
I believe Wakey should ditch the east and run its own affairs. In all fairness it may also be better for the east of the district aswell to adapt to its own identity and run things to suit itself.

I agree i think pontefract, castleford, featherstone and knottingley would be a lot better off for it too (perhaps normy too but people there tend to be split) especially in terms of funding for public projects, knottingley and featherstone having been particularly ignored by wmdc over the years.
