Agreed, there comes a point when you just can't affor your top earners, look at the bulls!!
But I cannot believe that is where we are, but with attendences low this season, our projected income must have been down, so maybe danny has to be a bit realistic.
It's all a bit iffy really, and he also pays his agent to look after his best intrests, which usually is money!!!

| Quote ="worksopwildcat"I thought DB owed JK a great deal in the sense that if it wasnt for JK the likeleyhood of Dannyboy being a top SL player would have been remote. Shame really but thats how it goes, some people have selective memories. Before everyone starts jumping up and down saying "its a short career and players need to get what they can" etc etc - my sense of the situation is that DB would be on the best money he has ever earned in his career and the new deal improves what is already a very good financial position.'"
I dont understand that, when kear signed him he was getting intrest from a number of sl clubs, and would have been resigned by cas if he would have been willing to wait till after the gf.

| I'm sorry but the thought of BJ being our main play maker next year leaves me very cold indeed. Nothing against Ben as i think he would link well with Brough but he's not a pivotal player as we know only too well.
The club has to make a stand and for once prevent our biggest player leaving as history tells me if we dont pull our figure out another 1) Topliss to Hull 2) Ellis to Leeds 3) Solomona to Bulls is well on the cards.
If we are serious about building a team for the future Brough must stay or its yet another step back

your sentiment I make 100% right, but in practice I fear not.
It is a wholly unsustainable approach, and would hold the club to ransome, by both players and even worse agents!!
We should make a fair and honest offer, that we can afford and that values the player, JK should then be giving them the big sell and the I have a dream speech, etc.
It is then up to the playerto make up his mind in the time allowed by the club, if not move on, simples!!!!
I know it's not that easy really, but it bloody ought to be!!!

| I tend to agree with kinleycat.
There's a global reccession on at the moment,i've not had a wage rise in three years and don't look like getting one next year either. If DB's got anything like a 10% percent increase he should deem himself a very lucky guy,we can only pay wages in line with our crowds and income stream, move away from that and we'd be comitting financial suicide.
I hope DB sees sense and accepts what i'm told is a very good increase in wages,if not we'll have to sit back and see who comes in for him.

I know one thing for sure, DB agent is a top bloke, and agents are no worse than clubs when it comes to contract talks. I just think that DB needs to do what is best for him, we are fans, they (players) are employed by the club.
I dont know what he wants, or what he is being offered, but Wakefield are far from sqeeky clean when it comes down to wages, promises, and loyalty.

If three or four companies' were after your services would you turn them down out of hand, or would you go for better wages and conditions simple choice really for the sake of a few extra quid do we want to keep one of the best scrum halves' in the league or not right or wrong thats the situation.

I'm sure as you say, he is a top bloke, I don't even know his name.
It is however in his own best intrest for his client to earn as much money as possible, in order to earn his "10%". that is not in the "clubs" best interests.
I am a fan of wakefield trinity, not one player or one agent, therefor I am scepticle of agents.
You are right also about the "clubs" not being aqueeky clean, not just Wakefield and not just rugby league, which is why we find ourselves in a situation of having to use a third party, reap what you sow!!!
3 into 2 doesn't go for me, the clubs should be trusted to make there best offer and the player should be honest and deal responsibly with their club, basically that's what most fans want.
So come on wakey make him the best offer you can, danny take it, cos we want you to stay, and lets kick on next season and look forward to a bright new future in a shiny new ground!!!!!

In a short career you cant blame anyone for maximising there earnings and if he has the possibility of higher offers elsewhere then you have the possibility of a disgruntled player on your hands?

fair enough, everyone has the right to choose there employer and if someone has the choice they also have right to go to the highest bidder.
All most fans would like is a bit of up front honesty, we do get attached to these guys, and we feel a bit let down when they turn us over.
A bit if honesty is all I ask, and that means from the club to danny aswell!!!

Toppo was a Stand Off.. but didnt leave Trinity until he was into his early 30's... then came back aged 36 as player coach/ coach... also it was in his years away from us that he won medals.... I also remember reading that the club also thought it was time for him to move on...
however if you are looking at players we have had and not been able to keep (for whatever reason and I only include the ones I personally think would have been worth keeping)... David Smith... David Jeans... Bob Haigh... Ian Brooke... Mick Morgan... Trevor Skerrett... Keith Rayne... Kevin Rayne... Andy Kelly... David Finch... Graham Idle... .....and so on until more recent times) Colin Maskill... Ben Westwood... Keith Mason... Ryan Hudson... Nigel Wright... Gareth Ellis... Adrian Flynn... Richard Goddard... Alan Hunte... Ryan Atkins... Scott Grix... Olivier Elima... Oliver Wilkes... Jason Golden... Peter Fox... Jay Pitts
maybe Danny Brough will join this list... maybe not...

The thing with Toppo is we had the best years out of him, but its different with Brough as he probably has the best years in front of him. The club is in an unenviable position at the moment, on one hand they have one of the most talented scrum halfs' in SL do they try and find a bit extra for him at the expense of somebody else and perhaps cause unrest in the camp or do they say enough Danny boy take it or leave it if its not enough go where the grass is greener, a bit of a dilemma for the club either way it will upset fans.

| I know his agent wants him to earn a massive contract. However a player is only worth what someone is prepared to pay, so lets look at the facts.
For a start some people say the reason he is not in the England camp is due to his drinking habits. You hear quite a bit about that from various people. So Tony Smith dosn't want him so that would rule out a move to Warrington.
Saints Eastmond /Pryce = No
Wigan Leuleli /Tomkins =No
Salford just sold Myler must have some cash so possible.
Shudds They have stated they would like him, they have cash,so possible.
Bradford skint
Leeds Dannyboy and Burrow=NO
Cas Sherwin/chase =NO
Hull Don't think he'd ever go back there
Hull KR Just signed Dobson and still have Cooke would say No.
Looking at that there seems to be very few options.

All the bold ones would have him. Replace overseas player with long term English signing would be appealing.
He is worth a lot to us. We can't afford to lose him. Pay him a very good salary without breaking the bank.

| im in two minds with this one on brough, firstly make him an offer we can afford and if he dont take it sell him now while hes in contract. i think sometimes our performances have been better without him where we have thrown the ball about. saying that hes got a great kicking game and he can get us out of it when the forwards are on the back foot, but let him hold the club to ransom, not a chance.

Although the club benefited to the tune of £100K for Ellis they were left woefully short on the field, all because the club didn’t want to lose him for nothing. In my mind, whether Brough signs or not, Trinity should keep him here and not sell him. He is worth more to the team then £100K would be and right now there are no alternatives left in the market (although M&S shares may go up). The overseas import numbers are already top heavy and the best halves are already signed up. Wakefield would be relying on Jeffries and Obst and the half back paring which whilst not the end of the world it would certainly be lacking. Also he is a valued ‘club trained’ player.
